Does anyone own or know much about the 1911-d quarter eagle?

I have been interested in this coin for awhile but I don't know if it is a good buy. What do you guys think about this one? Well priced? Too high? Just right?

I have herd rumors from more than one source that this date is being artifically inflated, in order to profit take by speculators who silently purchased as many as they could get sometime back. Again, I have no concrete evidence and dont even do much with gold, but herd this from more than one person who are independent of one another.

I do know that it is a very popular coin, and around here thier is always someone looking for one. It is one of the few gold sets that folks try to build a complete collection of vs just buying a single type example for thier collections.

The price in the cdn has risen drastically in past year??

Just a quick look at the price increase percentage, it looks as if the collector grades have performed better, which is also the grade ranges that would be easily manipulated by a silent buying binge for profit taking, as you would have a larger collector base at those levels when it came time to sell them.

  • My wife and I are trying to complete a PCGS set of Indians in MS62. We purchased the 11-d earlier this year. It, along with the others in our less than complete set, is a truly beautiful coin. The 11-d is a very popular key among collectors, and I suspect its pricing trends will follow that of most other key dates. For further proof, just compare the pricing trends of the 11-d with other keys from the last 100 years. Performance has been steadily rising for many years, with some pauses during downturns. If you have any other questions about the coin or our purchase, feel free to PM me.

By the way, this was my first post to the forum... image

    Overpriced at this time IMHO

I would not consider inventorying them. When they do come in, I have them re-wholesaled before I even make an offer.

    Careful!

I have never liked the quarter eagles as they are too small and I feel they are manipulated by dealers. The $5's are much rarer but the 11-d and 1914 are the only two worth buying as they can always be sold.

I have owned several but decided against buying any.....I feel they are overpriced relative to rarity.

    never mind.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • Haletj, thank you for the warm welcome.

Overpriced, manipulated...maybe, but if you buy the series you enjoy, then no regrets. It is the only real key in the series. It is in demand. If you are worried about turning a profit in one year, I would move on to another series (or seriously consider moving your profit vehicle away from collectibles). If you are worried about losing money in 15-20 years, it will perform similar to other key dates IMO. Keep the opinions coming--always interested in more experienced collector/dealer opinions.
