Has anyone been able to obtain Morgan DMPL grades lately from PCGS?

Or did you get BBs back?

If it is really close to DMPL - Then you will get it back in a BB for "Altered Surfaces"
edited to add- That is why ANACS gets all my Morgan's now.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"
  • Not one!!! Dmpls go to PL's, NGC PL's go to MS (one grade higher ). I'm cracking out some old Green Tag Pcgs DMPL's that are undergraded IMO, to see if its me or them. Will know in a month or so.image

DMPLs are tough, period. PCGS is applying a standard these days never before applied by any grading service, not even PCGS. There is a trickle-down effect into pls, so now they are graded tougher.

I have an experiment underway, with two coins in to PCGS as a claim against the guarantee. Both were green-holdered pls, and by today's standard, neither would grade pl. They can't have it both ways.

I think it is like officiating in professional sports. Calls will always be missed, but consistency is refreshing.
    I brake for ear bars.

Thanks guys for the replies. You have received exactly what I have, DMPLs as, "altered surfaces" and PL's as MS. Guess the ones I have now will go elsewhere.

In reply to your request, I received these grades and posted following (2) threads on and on a previous submission from September 28th and June 14th which are both appended below. Made 4 DMPL's and 9 PL's out of the 26 coins submitted, and most came back as I had expected.

Here are the grades that I received on the 10 Morgan Dollars which I submitted via economy grade service during the April PCGS Las Vegas Invitational.

I am really pleased with the 1880-CC in 64-DMPL, the 1890-CC in 63 DMPL and the 1891-CC in 63 PL

The 1881-S in MS-66 is kind of cool, since it's the only Morgan that I now own in MS-66 -- and I made it!

    1879-S S$1 USA MS65
    1880-CC S$1 (8/High 7) USA MS64DM
    1880-S S$1 USA MS63PL
    1881-S S$1 USA MS66
    1881-S S$1 USA MS64
    1882 S$1 USA MS63PL
    1890-CC S$1 USA MS63DM
    1890-S S$1 USA MS64
    1891-CC S$1 USA MS63PL
    1891-S S$1 USA MS63

Stuart, either you won the lottery or are a member of the, "in" crowd. Your experiences aren't what the majority of us are experiencing based upon posts and E-mail.

GAT: I've owned many of the coins that I recently submitted to PCGS for 25-30 years. I purchased all of these raw, and most were purchased in the 1978-83 timeframe, before TPGS's existed.

I personally don't feel that my coin submissions are treated any differently than others, however I did submit a high percentage of Morgan Dollar CC's which I feel are being a bit more loosely graded than typical Morgans.

By the way, the coin for which I did win the gradng lottery was a Top Pop 1/0 1892-S $20 Liberty in PCGS MS-65 that I made a few months ago -- that was a lot of fun!!!

I am very pleased with my results so far.

  • and if you believe that, then you also believe in the Easter Bunny. They are grading so tight now making coins is very difficult.
  • I know for a fact that Stuart's got a great eye. But the days of sneaking through a Morgan with 6" clear reflectivity and getting a DMPL grade instead of PL are over. I forgot to say that a dealer has already submitted for me a MS-63 Dpl* NGC crackout with nice 8" mirrors and this my tell me more. It's low end in terms of marks but a clear DMPL and the dealer usually submits more expensive high grade stuff. The PCGS definition of PL clearly is tighter because they want "watery, clear fields" and many semi-cameoed PL's just are a bit grainy/foggy even though there is nice mirror reflection meeting the old ANA definition of PL.

  • VamCollector--- I just almost fainted when I saw your coin. A MONTH ago I got back essentially the IDENTICAL coin in color and grade in a 1878-S. It was bagged "questionable color". It was collected at a bank in 1960 from a bank roll and stored in a brown envelope until submitted. The only thing I can think is someone has figured out how to fake this toning because I know my coin is NT----not worth much, but NT!!! I was so mad I sent it to a major dealer and he felt PCGS was just running scared right now and just wants to stick to commercial dipped crud without risk. Or, maybe they just don't know what a real, natural 78 or 78-S looks like. My respect for their opinion on Morgans is-- well you know. Beautiful coin, by the way. image

  • Thanks, it is a really nice coin. They only got one shot at this one to get it right.

i gotcha on the sports officiating...first hand and up close and personal...aka been there done that

now on to your post above..and listen to this.....i am from wall street...and i am also an economist.....pcgs is a public company...how can i increase the shareholders value??? ( i know what your thinking and your right...insiders own most of it..but hey i got several million from clucks ( aka investors )...now im gona line my pockets FIRST....mmmmif i always grade the same..i will grade all the coins in no time and be out of biz in a few years...bad idea...so lets start ranking coins ... you know ranking coins...lets take the best and put a 66 on it and pop 1 it......as we make more 66 coins the pop will fill up and in five years the first 66 owner will say hey...my coin is the best....why you guys putting 66 on all those other coins....good point why dont you sent it in and pay us to grade it again.....presto 67...same coin 2 fees...as we go down the food chain thru the other 66 coins some we can put 65 on and some real nice ones we will put 66 on...now the 65 will re submit again...and so will the 66...when its all said and done we will have graded the same coins 10...20 times....mmmmm some big money spent on the same coins...over and over...and thats just one grade jump over 5 years...next stop ...68....after that...69.....same coins 100 fees....the fact is that the best of the best 50 years ago...are still the best of the best...they are not in 65 holders like in 1986...they are in 68 holders....going to 69......now in the mean time...when we have to make our numbers for wall street and make our options worth more we need to.........get stupid with our grading and turn the dmpl market on its ear....we will make several thousand fees....and then settle it down to normal...next stop.....cameo.....we will trun it upside down...then fix it.....after we make several thousand fees...next stop....fullbands.......hey lets do full steps....this is so easy to see

    what say ye!!!
my goal is to find the monsters and i go where they are but i sometimes miss some.... so if you have any and want to sell IM THE BUYER FOR THEM!!!
