Bought a bunch of toned Jeffs, but afraid to put them in wht. blue folder

I bought a bunch of beautiful Jefferson toners to replace the junk that's currently in my 38-64 whitman folder, but now I'm hesitant to put them in there b/c 1) they look too nice not to show both sides and 2) as funny as it sounds, I'm afraid of they might tone and undo the current toning. Should I put them in there? Should I get a Dansco album? Should I keep em in flips?

  • If you don't want them to tone any further, get an Intercept Shield album.

How about a nice Capitol plastics holder? I think they come in about 5 different colors and they look pretty classy. mike image

I know just what you are saying. Albums have created some really hard choices for me over the years.
It's hard to place a really nice coin in an album without worrying about it changing.

I have a collection of nice Jeffersons in a Dansco album. I'm going to get one of the new corrosion inhibiting slipcases they now offer. The slipcases are like intercept shield. Also I keep the whole album in a large ziplock freezer bag with a bunch of dessicant packets in it. For the Modern proofs and some fullsteppers I have a couple of blank Dansco pages that I ordered that are mm or so bigger than a nickel. I'm putting the proofs and fullsteppers into Kointains and then putting them into the album (because the holes are just a bit bigger than a nickel the Kointains fit perfectly). For the older pre-1950 proof Jeffersons I'm still hesitant to put them into the albums. For them I'm putting them into a Kointain then heatsealing them into PVC-free safeflips with a copper foil label and storing them in sealed tins with copper foil lined bottoms and dessicant inside. If the atmosphere proves to be corrosive the copper label will turn brown and I'll know that the coin is in danger and will take further steps to protect them. Attached is a picture of one of the old proofs sealed in with the copper label. It sounds extreme, but I actually enjoy doing this. I feel like I am creating a time capsule and that the coins will look as good as they do now decades into the future.
    • I saw those new corrosion inhibiting dansco albums...I may have to pick one of those up

I`d be leary about long term storage in the 2x2 flips. I have a few that that has been in them for 25+ years and they have a nasty, icky film on them. Unless I send them in for conservation, which isn`t worth the expense considering thier very common coins, they`re basically ruined as a collectable coin(s). I still intend to keep them as is for posterity reasons though as a reminder not to keep them in there for the long term.

As suggested already, I would lean more towards Capital Holders or Intercept Shields or AirTites to preserve them in their current state for as long as possible.

Maybe that's because you had PVC flips imageimage

Sounds like you're thinking of putting them in the old-style - cheap folders that you press the coins into the holder with your thumb so it stays in the folder and the reverse is then hidden from view - Those folders are ONLY for circulated sets - For Unc & Proof coins NEVER use that kind of folder unless you plan on turning them into worthless circulated coins - Anytime they are "looked at" there is the risk of "handling" (touching the surface of the unprotected coin) - this is very bad for high-end coins - Invest in an album with slides that protect the coin and that you can see both sides of the coin - The other bad thing about the Whitman FOLDERS is that they will virtually ruin the reverse side of the coin because as I recall there is glue (or at least they used to have glue) on the paper backing & while the paper backing of the old Meghrig (thoses old style green albums with the plastic slides that you could only see one side of the coin) would nicely tone the reverse side of the coin, the glue on the reverse side of the Whitman folders would essentially ruin the reverse side as the coins would become environmentally damaged from the chemicals in the glue - Ever wonder why you see slabbed IHCs that are virtually Red on one side (almost always the front) and you turn it over and its a streaky, dull grey-brown-black? Most likely answer: Whitman FOLDERS - why turn a valuble coin into an environmentally damaged coin? Especially when there are numerous excellent ways to display unslabbed coins that actually protect the coin.

FYI, I just happened to notice that someone was selling Capital plastic holders on Overstock for BIN of less than 1/2 of the price that they normally go for. It looks like he has many of them for many different denominations, but here is a link to one for Jeffersons Capital Holders for Jeffs
    • ah, thanks for the tips, newmismatist...
