Ever loose track of your coin inventory?

badgerbadger Posts: 1,217 ✭✭✭
I am going to have to dig up all my coins and start a new inventory. I am having to check my registry sets to see what I own. I keep putting 'spares' up for sale to find it's my last dcam or it was a pedigree coin that I thought I was going to keep.

How many coins does it usually take before you loose track?

I don't have too many coins, so no problems.

I loose my sheets of coins I need every time I want to go to a coin show. Don't know where they all go but it may have something to do with age.

CameoDimeMan - well it was a bit of a surprise - let me know when you want to sell the Ottaway.

Also, I just bought a non-upgrade DCam early 50's Jeff.

MS Works data base help's me. That and a binder called Coin Inventory that I've had since before I had a computer. Thats how come I knew I needed those coins I bought from you.

  • I store it in MSWorks, like LindeDad, then shoot it off to a floppy every time I add one, then put it back in my safe...on Sunday's, I copy to a second floppy that stays with my person/in car just in case...if I need a copy, I just print it out off the floppy. Price paid, cert #, whom I got it from, where its stored, etc....everythin I need to know about each coin...

Buy plenty of slab containers, figure out what sets you are going to collect, and if you find a keeper, but it in the appropriate container, marked "registry set" or "keepers" or whatever. Leave empty spots in the containers to show what coins you need. So, that is a physical way to track your coins. Extras go into separate container marked "for sale." If there are some duplicates you view as keepers, open up a box for them as well. Again, you keep track physically.

You need to keep records, but use that as a back-up system to the physical inventory system. When you hold your container marked "for sale" you can then refer to your records and see what you paid and that should help you figure out a fair sales price.

This system may not be perfect, but it works.

  • I lost all my flips one time. I just bummed more off members here and was back on track in no time!

As long as you didn't lose my 50 Franklin. But mine wouldn't be a NGC coin.

Yep...... Age does strange things to the memory. Found stuff today that was not known to exist in the collection. Bought, stashed and forgot. image

Oh my God!! I felt a little nauseous reading that- that's certainly not a coin you want to lose. I hope it turns up!!

My system is remarkably similar to lava's - I use Excel to keep it in the computer.

  • I just keep an up to date list in Excel. I have messed up at least once. The key is to be very diligent about adding to the list the minute a new coin arrives and to modify the list the minute an old coin leaves. I plan on doing a physical inventory soon which should make me aware of any problems. image

Speaking of Inventory Control, anyone use "My Heritage" ? Anyone (other than myself ) having problems adding coins to their sets ? I emailed them about my problem but have not gotten a response in two weeks. (They must be too busy auctioning off coins ).
