Attached below is a 1995-P cent struck on a 1995-P dime. The brown around the rim is toning.

So Paul - am I to understand that a dime that was already struck got into the cent hopper and got struck as a cent?

That's a really nice one, with two full dates, one on each side. Thanks for showing it off.

Yes Frank.image What I believed happened was that a dime got stuck in the top of the large canvas cart that the US mint uses to transport coins within the mint. The same cart was later used for cent planchets, when these were dumped into the canvas bin it shook the dime loose and the dime got struck along with the cent planchets.

    Silvertowne offered $1100 for it.

    The Rim is reeded.

Frank....I think the canvas carts have support bars that the canvas wraps around at the top. That is where the dime got lodged. imo

That is really super cool. And thanks for the explanation of how they occur. May I ask how you came by it? Was it a discovery or did you buy it?

It would be even cooler if the cent were a DDO! image

Odd, usually double denomination dime/cent pieces retail for around $300. It must be really nice for Silvertowne to have ofered $1100. (Both dates are unusually clear though.) Are canvas transport bins new at the mint? Because they used to use metal bins.

It was a "walk in" at my buddy's coin shop. This is the second one that was walked into his shop.

conder101....I could be wrong about the canvas bins.
The reason Silvertowne wanted this piece is that they are doing some TV show on these error coins. Silvertowne already owns at least two other examples of this same error. I think it is an educational show, but I am not sure.
