Help with the value of 1883cc Morgan Dollar

Could someone please help me "try" to figure out what the value of this 1883cc Morgan dollar is worth?

I have no knowledge of coin collecting, I just found this website by doing a google search. My grandfather gave me this coin when I was a child and I have cherished it every since. I am just wondering what it might be worth today.

Here's a link to the picture of the coin. Click here

I've included an email address on the web page with the coin. If anyone can email me an idea I would really appreciate it.

Thank you very much for your help!

  • Sorry I can't see the coin from work, but someone will be along to give you and approximate grade and value.....all CC morgan's are considered better date coins so it should be worth more than your standard Morgan whatever the condition is.

Their is a price guide on this site as well so if you need to know approximate coin values just use the guide here.

    Welcome!

Hard to tell if its about uncirculated or uncirculated. Breast feathers on the eagle look okay, but the hair above the ear is a little soft.
How is the luster? Are there any distracting marks on the cheek or around Liberty?
Probably worth $85-125 range. But priceless because it was your grandfather's coin. Hold on to it and enjoy it!

  • Thank you all for your kind words and welcoming me.

Yes you are all right. This coin is priceless and I will never part with it. I found it last weekend in my safe deposit box at the bank and thought I would bring it home for a couple days to look at.

Wow it's worth almost $100??? Great. I wonder how my grand father got it. He was born in 1910 so it might have been pocket change at the time.

Someone asked me about the "luster" in the coin. I'm sorry, but I don't know what that means.

The coin was circulated I'm sure, and the edges (like on a quarter) are nice and deep. So I don't think this coin was put thru the wear and tear that todays coins are. I'm sure they didn't have vending machines or payphones back in those days.

Is there a link somewhere that can tell me the value when I decide to look again (maybe in a couple years) for the coin?

Thanks again everyone! It's nice to meet you!

It's a nice AU coin, my guess is AU55.

Current Grey Sheet "Ask" for an AU50 is $92. "Ask" for an MS60 is $175. Yours is worth about $100 or slightly more.
    When in doubt, don't.
  • Their are a lot of price guides available like Numismedia.com and the one here on the PCGS forums that can help in the future, but keep in mind that the one on this site refers to Graded coins so a raw coin is unlikely to pull the same type of money image

By the way WELCOME TO THE BOARDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
  • Thank you for the tip about the website Numismedia.com.

Can anyone tell me where I can take the coin to have it professionally graded, and how much that service would cost?

    Thank you again.

I feel, and many here will agree with me, is if you want it slabbed send it to ANACS.
If the coin is deemed to have some `problem`they will make note of it on the insert.
It might read: ANACS 1$ 1883 CC AU Details Cleaned EF45
But ofcourse, your shooting for the AU55 on that one it looks.
Clearly a lightly circulated dollar coin.

    Welcome and Good Luck
