Question on selling German Empire coins

I have a couple slabbed 1/2 Mark coins from the German Empire. One is a 1905D and the other is a 1907J. They list for $35 and $110 respectively in Krause in Unc. These coins are graded MS65. How much of a premium should one expect for a MS65 coin? I know certified Italian coins go for multiple of Krause in MS65, is the same for German coins?

I have no idea, but it seems logical (of course, logic isn't the prime mover of ebay) that they'd command a decent premium, if you have good pictures.

  • Maybe this is a little OT, but I was just wondering -

Don, how did you manage to shrink that magnificent photo down to icon size?image

Better date German half and one marks roll over and die. Half marks do a little better than 1 marks but you will likely receive less than catalog for all grades below MS67. My guess is the closing price will be about $30 for the '05D and $50 for the '07J.

I doubt that there is a big premium... now if they have attractive toning with beautiful color that could help.

  • Off-eBay, in the past they could bring a 25% premium to Krause, particularly if sold on the German market (which would discount it for being slabbed), but these are not all that exceptionally rare and the German market has softened somewhat over the last year or so. If a collector just wants a stempelglanz example, MS-63 is fine and MS-65 not much better.
