It looks very washed out. It's not likely to be original. My guess is that it's an average AU at best, regardless of what the seller might claim. What's the ask for that date in Spink?
If you're looking for a decent half crown, it might be best to wait for the NY International show in January. I would bet that some nicer pieces would be in the UK section of the Heritage sale. It's supposed to have a good number of high quality pieces.
It's soooo hard to tell from a one off photo. If it was a seller I trusted I would consider the coin, as you are. This is one of those coins that NEEDS a verbal description in addition to the image. You can't always tell for certain if a coin has been dipped and/or harshly cleaned from a scan/photo. Unless the seller is willing to discuss it openly I would pass on this coin. If it turns out to be uncleaned and MS61ish the price is not too far off the mark but probably not a bargain, in my opinion. An very interesting thread would be the discussion of digital photography vrs. flatbed scans for imaging coins. I use both and they certainly render vastly different results of the same coin or medal. So much so that sometimes ask about the image when I am the buyer.
I've seen coins of that type with similar pictures. The coin in this thread may not even be UNC and I would certainly suspect cleaning. I have a few low-end UNCs of that type that would look similar if scanned.
Since you asked.... I would pass on this one because I think it is top pound sterling for a washed out coin. While I concede that I have had very little luck with this series, I would wait because it is likely a better coin can be found for less money.

Just saw who the seller is - certainly more credible than most on ebay. Does mention the coin as "practically mint state" which could be construed as "not quite UNC." Spink lists the date at £125 EF and £300 UNC. I still think Spink prices at the high end for coins, so £125-£140 is more my price point for a coin like that.

Tom, he has a 1893 Crown slabbed MS-62 on his website that he calls EF/Unc. I Don't know if the coin was misgraded or just his more strict European grading standard. He ran a PCGS graded MS64 coin the other day he described as aBU so I suspect the latter. Or maybe a shot at US grading?????
Difficult to tell, Bob. The "aBU" grade means different things to different people. It could mean "uncirculated and nearly brilliant" or it could mean "brilliant and nearly uncirculated." There needs to be some clarity there. The better sellers probably are saying the former.
Exactly...it's fine if you are dealing with someone in Europe that has always used the more strict European standard and you know what it represents. But with Ebay I'm afraid the US and European standards are being mixed and you don't know what you have. On one UK dealer's website the grading terms gEF, about Uncirculated, Uncirculated, BU, aBU, Mint State and about Mint State are all used. I know this particular dealer and believe he grades accurately but I get lost in the exact interpretation of some of these terms.
Colin Cooke was the seller, I did not bid on it, again it's tough to tell if the conidition is 'cleaned' or not, the coin did not sell. I feel that a Dig Pix, can reveal more, but again lighting and the camera can have alot to do with it. Scanners may not be as revealing? just for the heck of it I think I will post a coin that I will both photograph and scan....
