Bag or Album Toned Peace $?????

imageimage

I'm leaning bag toned on this one. The reverse is brillant with slight toning on the reverse which corresponds to the area of darkest toning on the obverse.

For the Morgan experts -- if it were album toned, would you expect to find some type of toning on the rim inside the reeding? Whereas with a bag toned example only the reeding/rim pressed up against the bag would have toning? Or I am way off base with that hypothetical?

What are the diagnostics for bag toned crescents vs. album toned crescents???

BTW -- Thanks Darin --

  • That toning looks suspicous to me. Although it might be the lack of sleep and deterioration of my eyesight from staring at this computer screen for so long.

I always thought album toning was mottled or wavy and didn't end so abruptly. If it's NT, I'd guess it was bag toned.

perhaps I'm just tired too, but.... if it was bag toned, wouldn't the lower right of the reverse be toned as opposed to the lower left.

uummm. oooops, tell ya how tired I am, had to grab a coin and actually flip it around, I guess it would be on the proper sideimage

NT or AT, I have no clue, and would not even try to wager a guess. I don't really collect toned silver, but that is nice.

Most likely bag toned, with another dollar partially covering it. image
  • It looks like bag. I would speculate that it's from the bottem of the bag and is caused by condensation of water vapor as much as diffuse hydrogen sulfide. On the rim a lot of people have it mixed up. The colored toning is from long term exposure to hydrogen sulfide gas released from the source (bag/album) and interaction of this gas as it crosses a slight film of water as a condensing solvent. As the gas passes across the denticles or reeding, there is a different amount of exposure resulting in a different thickness/color in denticles verses high spots microns away. These color-shade differences are a MAJOR place to check for NT. Liquid and heat produce uniform colors, gas does not. Canvas bags and album paper protects (in part) the coin from oxidation rather than directly imparting the hydrogen sulfide as a liquid. So the answer isn't that a coin tones since it is "pressed up against the bag", it will tone in the reeding AWAY from the bag, but close enough to bag to be a coin that reacts slowly with gas flow. Same with a album, thickess/deepest color near album, less far away as sulfide is used up. Sorry this is so long, hope it's clear.

I have little doubt its NT. I imagine if you were going to AT a Peace $, you'd make it a little more attractive than this one. image

TPN, That's assuming that someone who AT's a coin can control the toning process! - And that's the problem with the ATers: they can't, so there's some pretty FUGLY stuff out there

I'm not suggesting that your coin's AT, but I will say that a crescent toned Obv with a partially, litely toned reverse would give me pause - How did that happen? IF 1 coin was put in a bag with another coin (or something round, the size of a silver dollar) partially covering it, that's what you might see - but how many single/double silver dollars were stored in a bag so that both sides were in contact with the bag - Not to say it couldn't happen, just would make me analyze that coin carefully.
