1924-S Peace $1 Edited to Add Question

Sorry about the bad pictures. I just have to bite the bullet and invest in a good camera. Maybe Santa will be good to me this year? If you can help, I appreciate it. This coin was sent to me in error. The seller had two ending at the same time. If you guys think it's any good I may to try to work a deal. Lee

  • Obviously circulated because of the wear on the high points, so it's less than MS60.

Kinda shiny obverse. Check for hairlines to see if it's been cleaned.

My first impression is AU55 but may go anywhere from XF to AU58

  • This is the coin that he sent instead of the one in your sig line?

If so, I'd return it and ask for the other one. I would grade this no higher than an XF40/45. While the pic is small, the one in your sig line looks to be AU with a nice strike for a S mint Peace $.

  • I think your camera is fine. The close up photo says XF40/45. I agree with TonedPeaceNut.

The contact marks on that coin are too scattered in too may places to call it AU. IE...high points -vs- field. If it was only played in a slot machine on the International Space Station, it would be a commercial AU. The toning looks post-mortem. In my opinion.

One more thing to look for on Peace Dollars.....When you see dimples, contact marks, scouring, etc... between the rays on the reverse...that is not a sign of normal wear on anything above VF/XF. I remember looking at a 1969 Chevy recently advertised with 9,000 "original" miles. The car looked 'Brilliant Uncirculated' but the rubber on the break pedal was paper thin among other things.

  • I guess thet didn't have a full return policy per my suggestion. It looks about Ef-40 and has sub-par "eye appeal" . Certified in that grade it might retail for $30 but raw it's less, and a good buy around $14 for an album in your "deal" IMO. My only concern re:return is the seller might have sent out the other coin (yours) to someone else and can't get it back. What is more important than the grade and what others say, is if YOU think the coin has great "eye appeal" and you're HAPPY to own it. Congradulations on your patience with the seller as I would be hard pressed to put up with all the emails and unprofessional coin mix-ups!

image Thanks for all your comments. She's going back.

TonedPeaceNut - Yes, they sent this instead of Sig Line coin.

The seller said they will reimburse me my cost's to return, damn right! Lee

Actually, I think this IS the one in the sig line -- the toning pattern looks the same. I agree with TPN, you should return it. That seller has a no questions asked return policy, so take advantage of it!! What is odd is that all that sellers coins seem to have the same rosy-type toning -- perhaps its a large hoard that was stored in the same location.

Looks like an EF45. There is some luster left, but not enought to make AU. What grade were you hoping for? Why are you sending it back? Was the grade much lower than you thought?

    merc,
This is not the coin I won. Seller had two 1924-S Peace $1 ending at the same time. Sent me this one in error intead of sig line coin. I combined shipping on another coin I won, other sig line coin, so couldn't return to sender unless I wanted to hold my other coin hostage. Probably should have done that anyway. Less of a hassle? Lee
  • After looking again, it DOES look like you got the wrong coin. I'd still just get a refund if I were you. The actual coin, if he still has it, will likely have that "cleaned" look like the one you received.

image The seller is now holding the coin I won till the ruturn of the one they sent in error. Is this standard practice? In my mind it's my coin, I paid for it. When they discovered their error they should have sent my coin immediately? I sent the coin they sent in error back to them Priority Mail the next day? Thanks for the help! Lee
