PCGS's new feature of early numismatic referance material shows a 1859/60 price's realized pamphlet list various coins, patterns, denomination's, grade's, and price's each item sold for, and many are less than 40 years old with some being less than 3 years old,
which go's to show you that even pre-Civil War collectors paid big bucks for good moderns of the day.

  • Perhaps the term "modern" would have a different meaning in that context - the US mint was in existence for just 74 years at that time, compared to 228 years of coin production now, with a huge increase in production in the years after 1860. Just a thought.
