OT - Metallic Paper Pirate Ships

Just an odd couple of items I picked up. Opinions?
Gold and silver embossed foil, undated (1988). From a set of 30 different that originally sold for $1155 together.
They're listed under East Caribbean States in the Standard Catalog of World Paper Money.

So at $440/oz. each note is worth $44 in gold bullion in addition to whatever silver is there? Cool!

It will take me a day or so, but I will scan in all 30 pieces if you wantimage
  • Any idea how many sets were issued?
Pictures would be great if you find the time, Boz!

Interesting that when I posted this on the 'U.S. & World' Paper Money Forum the only two comments in reply were:

    '?'

    &

'Now where did I leave my Franklin Mint set?'

If it's not U.S. oriented it's just play money to them, it seems. And I thought the U.S. Coin Forum was bad! image

  • They are very lovely indeed!! A full set is usually hard to come by as there weren't all that many made. I don't know what they're going for nowadays, but several years ago I saw one go for something like $3000.

  • I'm seeing that there are $30 and $50 notes as well as the $100 notes. Are they different sizes/weights?
My '98 ('96) edition of the Standard Catalog of World Paper Money lists a similar undated 1983 set of 12 $30 notes featuring flowers and animals as well as the 1988 set of 30 $100 notes. Does anyone else have a later catalog with more info?

Some info on them I found:

The set is called: The Saga of Treasure Ships & Pirates. The $100 notes depict famous Pirate Treasure Ships and are the official legal tender of Antiqua and Barbuda. Each Banknote mirrors a finely detailed image of the ships in .999 fine Silver against a brilliant background of 23 karat Gold Leaf. Alan D'Estrehan's contributed a total of 19 magnificent tall ship images for the Banknotes. It was his last original work. Award winning marine artist Mark Myers painted the remaining 21 images that completes the Thirty Gold & Silver Banknotes. Treasures are displayed in a hardbound display book. Thirty beautiful and art like individual real silver and real gold leaf covered banknotes, each with descriptions of the silver and gold $100 bills. A certificate of origin and authenticity. This set was limited to 20,000 sets. Each has official signatures and serial number.

When you bought a complete set you also received a signed/ numbered lithograph done by the artist. Nice bonus. If I remember correctly they were only going to make 20,000 of each note,,quite a few were sold as individual and not as part of sets, so the number of complete sets is much lower.image

The art that I received was from By Mark Myers and numberd 17/950 and 10/10 the other my sister has now.
