What kind of toning would say this Morgan has? GRADE POSTED

At first I thought it might be album toning, particularly due to the ring of blue on the reverse, but the reverse also looks like envelope toning. What do you think it is?

Oh - and if you'd care to guess the grade, by all means - I'll post it in a little while image

Ahhhh! You must be wise in the ways of science! image
  • Nice Toning! image

I'd venture envelope toning - Before vinyl flips most dealers stored their coins in those 2x2 brown envelopes - OR ir could have been an obverse bag toned coin that then got put in an album and got album toning on the reverse - hard to determine definatively because we only know what it looks like today and we don't know the storage conditions over the previous 125 years.

Grade: Easy MS65, maybe even an MS66

I want to think is envelope as well.
What I have never understood is the difference in toning from obv. to rev.

Envelope and album. Coins are stored different ways by different owners.

Good question - maybe it has to do with how close one side was up against the paper as opposed to the other - or maybe even the fact that glue was used to put together the envelope on one side, while the other side was all paper.

Maybe it was in an album that had the reverse against plain grey cardboard with some kind of envelope type paper over the obverse. Weren't there albums with extra sheets or leaves in them?

    compare to this one

After seeing your edited post I'll say NGC ms65...

    Nice coin!!!
  • The coin has eye appeal and is an attractive Gem. I'm just trying to give an honest opinion in saying I think the reverse is naturally album toned but the obv. looks enhanced with blue. Colors other than monochromal yellow to brown shades just very rarely occur as completely blue in the Morgan series as this obverse does. When there is "electric blue" it almost always shows up looking like the other NT Morgan shown in this thread. There was a period that NGC let some docters get their blue AT coins through which I've seen, so I wonder how old the holder is? The color is "market acceptable" since it's attractive IMO and in a NGC holder.
