OT - eBay. Is this a scam email?

Got this email from eBay Safe Harbour. Real or fake?

eBay Safe Harbor Department Notice

Dear eBay Member,

Your bank has contacted us regarding some unauthorized charges of your credit card via the eBay system. We have reasons to believe that you changed your registration information or that someone else has unauthorized access to your eBay account. Please sign in to eBay using the link bellow, and update the requested information. Please verify all the info requested to be accurate. None of the personal information requested will be stored on our system, everything is used only to verify that you are the rightful owner of the account and of the credit card linked to your account.

    That line means 100% fake! EBay, Paypal, Yahoo, etc., never tell you to click on a link in their messages. Instead, they tell you to go to their website and sign in.

  • definately a fake, forward the whole thing back to ebay at spoof@ebay.com. I also get similar about once a week for paypal and now bidpay. I'd like to give these guys a "bug" of my own.

  • You can see that it is a scam by looking at the sign in link. Ebay sign in is always on a secure server meaning that the address must ALWAYS start with HTTPS. The link in your email is only HTTP.

  • What do you reckon the success rate is on an e-mail like that?

    I know one old geezer who's a coin dealer who fell for it. But he's not quite the thing - turned up at the Midland Coin Fair one day and forgot his coins.

  • Ditto for similar emails from various banks. Even my wife knows to "delete without reading" the ones from SunTrust ... a bank that doesn't operate in our part of the country.
