The EF/AU knocked around Morgana are very simple. Look for 1894-Plain, 1895-O, 1889-CC, 03-S. Keep your hand up thru $750, pass anything else no matter how cheap it seems. The bidders usually get too excited over gold so pass. I've gone to estate auctions for 10 years, but just my opinion.

Also the common morgans in EF, at the last auction went for $20-$30, so I doubt that I'll be bidding on them.

If you bring a copy of Coinworld's "Coin Values", very rarely there will be a rare penny or something hidden in a small bagged-up group lot. But, the key is to be able to invest so much time but just stop bidding everytime the prices get near low wholesale. I only mention copper because recently while everyone was focused on gold coins, no one noticed some unc. pennys and I got them cheap. On Morgans carry the buy price of Howard's Rare Coins from the back of Coin World, subtract the auction B.P., postage etc., then a profit, that gives a bid amount. Also I don't trust gold coins, because there are so much counterfit and cleaned/altered material at little auctions. Have fun at least and good luck!

Me neither, but I definitely would be consigning them!

Be prepared to bid on the early lots- many times bidders in the small auctions are a little skittish at first to bid. And realize going into this auction that these coins have probably been shopped around to dealers for offers as well or at least appraised by someone. good luck and let us know what you get! mike

1851-C $1 might be a nice pickup depending on condition and authenticity.

On the gold, be sure you examine it closely! Many times, in auctions, some of the gold is counterfeit. Be Very, very careful.

There is a lot of counterfeit Calgold around. I agree with MD. If you do not know what you are doing, and you cannot afford to gamble with your money, avoid the uncertified gold.

Eric,

the auction was at Randy's Auction in Norfolk, Montacello Ave.

I got there at 9 to check out the coins, auction was to start at 10.

After looking at coins I noticed a sign that read "Coin and Jewlery sale to start at 12:30.

Went back to work for an hour or so and returned to Randy's at noon.

As I walk throught he door the last love token was being auctioned, Damn!!!!

My life's story a day late and abuncha morgans short

OK on Norfolk. Thats a bit further than I would want to drive for one of these, but had it been in Williamsburg or Newport News I would have been tempted. I've been to some in this area, but all I have seen is common stuff bid up way more than it was worth.

yup, that is what I've found to be the norm.

I still enjoy going, and will pick up a deal sooner or later.

Had a couple of nice toners in the bunch, one had textile toning that I wanted to buy.

I've been told many times about Cali gold, that if it's not a part of the hobby your studing don't even try to buy.
