  • The QX3 is good for quick and dirty imaging. You have to remember this was designed to be a kid's toy and the software has all the bells and whistles that kids would like. The 60X magniofication seems to be the optimal viewing magnification. 10X doesn't quite get it and the 200X is too much. I have no regrets buying mine (off of eBay for ~$25) and found it helpful when I had no other means to get images under magnification. I now have a microscope and a lens adapter to which I can connect my digital camera to the microscope and get images. This is a bit more work but the image quality is quite good.

Edited to add that my icon was imaged with the QX3 (1943-S S/S Mercury dime)

  • I've had pretty good luck just taking pics through a 17x loupe, but you have to have steady hands.

I do use a QX3, and would recommend it. The software's kinda cheesy, but it gets the job done. The pics aren't amazing quality, but they're just about always good enough. Try to pick one up on ebay, or go to Toys R Us where I got mine.

  • Yep I have one and I use to to find errors, RPM's, and even when I am VAM hunting Morgan Silver Dollars. You can't use it to get full size clear coin pictutres in my experience, but the 60X does a great job with looking at the fine details on a coins surface.

Own, use, and recommend it. The interface that comes with the scope is really geared for nine-year-olds, but it is also TWAIN-compatible, meaning you can bypass the stock interface through a program like Photoshop or Photo Deluxe.

A couple of caveats: don't expect to take a picture of an entire coin, as even at the 10x magnification you will cut off some of the coin. The 60x is great for taking close-ups of die varieties. Also, to get close enough to focus on a slabbed coin, you will have to trim away part of the bezel surrounding the camera.

The pics below were taken at 60x, as but one example of what the scope is capable of:

  • Sean,

Is this the scope that you're refering to?

I've been looking for something like this for a while now...looks like it takes pretty good pics of varieties!

    Is this a good price?

That's the one. You can probably get it for less on eBay or if you shop around a bit, they were well under $50 the last time I checked on the price.
