1961 Topps Baseball question

Hello, I was just curious what some of the real tough 1961 Topps Baseball to get in psa 8 or better. I know the Ralph Houk is a real expensive card, but what others are expensive and tough? I just started recently picking up some of the commons when i find bargains but i know some are going to get expensive. thanks Phil

  • What a great set! I'd have to say that the Bob Cerv and the Jim Gentile are probably two of the tougest. The SMR for both is around $200 but I would expect to pay at least twice that, if you were lucky. A Gentile sold recently on eBay for just under $500.

  • The Gentile and Cerv are two of the toughest cards. Also, in NM/MT 8, the Joe Gibbon is the toughest high number to find. I haven't seen one in ages on eBay so I have no idea what sort of price would be realized. The other two toughest cards are the WS #1 and the Chuck Dressen cards. A Dressen went in the neighborhood of $250 recently but I've seen it a lot higher than that. Then you have a second tier, which is made up of cards like the Pirates team (HI #), Frisco First liners, Dave Nicholson, and Rip Repulski, which all go for over $100. After that, pretty much everything is under $100, at least they have been lately.
  • Don't forget the 531 Coates. I have not seen one of these available in over a year. This one could easily get to over $1000. But then it also could go for $500. Ralph Terry #289 is also a very expensive card. Easily $500 to $1000, if well centered.

Correcting a typo above from a very knowledgeable '61 guy - Terry is #389.

Also #541 Roland Sheldon is a tough customer to find centered.

I'm guessing that the Yankees are also at a premium price from the 61 set?

So that's where it went (not that I was ready to buy it for my set).

In tracking the AS card, I don't think any of them have not been readily available in the past several months. There maybe one or two I haven't seen but that's just a perception.
  • Even on my second time around on this set I'm still having a time finding the following PSA 8 cards: 84 Maye, 301 Nichols, 303 Peters, 436 Maloney, 446 Taylor and 501 Demerit. It's a great set to build though, so good luck and enjoy.

  • Thanks to everyone for their input. I notice there seems to be a lot of 61 Psa graded available compared to the 1960 set. it took me about 3 years to finally put that set together, i'm still looking for about 15 cards to upgrade from 7's to 8's or better. Phil
  • Sorry about the typo!!

    Congratulations Hubcap!!! Great job. image

Hubcap? Is your set on the registry?
  • His set is #6 Al Zouky. A very nice set. He tells me that most of the cards he has had since he was a kid, and then had them graded.

  • Thanks Dr. Buck for the kind words. Actually, he has helped not only me immensely, but other 1961 collectors with their sets.

I also have the #5 set on the 1959 Topps baseball basic set registry as well. That is down to the real tough cards.

    Have a great days guys!!!!

Again curiosity gets the best of me about user names.

Hubcap... how does "Al Zouky" = "jl1414" = "JOE'S COLLECTABLE JUNK" = "Hubcap"?
