Newbie with a couple of questions

Man has the card business changed since I was a kid 20+ years ago. Getting back into the cards after MANY years and want to get some old cards graded, I'm assuming PSA is the way to go correct? I noticed that with the PSA membership you get "x" amount of submissions, is that for cards only or can you also submit autographs for authentication? My three best cards are the 52 and 53 Bowman Mantle and the 51 Bowman Ted Williams I'm very interested to see how they grade. I'm wondering if any of you can help identify a team card that I have, its of the 1950 Cincinnati Reds and measures 5 1/4" x 2", the back of the card lists the members of the team in red with a baseball bat, baseball, diamond border.

    Alan;

    Welcome aboard and back to the hobby! Many changes in 20+ years no doubt, but there is still much fun to be had and plenty of options to collect. These boards (and the idiots that post here) can be really helpful and can add to the enjoyment of collecting. As far as vintage grading, PSA is at the top, but you may find that you like SGC and maybe even GAI as well. You should check out their websites and a few eBay auctions to see what the holders are like, how values compare, etc. before committing to just PSA.

    The Reds team sounds like it is a 1951 Topps Team issue. These are pretty scarce and hard to find in top shape. In NM condition, it is valued at about $200.

    Welcome Alan. I am a peon compared to the knowledge shared by others on the board. There are many 50's experts who will provide their opinions, advice and suggestions if you post some images. Regards and good luck.
    Proud of my 16x20 autographed and framed collection - all signed in person. Not big on modern - I'm stuck in the past!

  • My scanning needs some work, I have no idea where all the green came from. I'll leave the condition issues to you guys!
  • ouch those scans look like crap, any suggestions?

    Wasy, does your Reds team card look like this? If so, it's 1951 Topps and quite scarce even in low grade like mine. (Only 11 Reds cards graded, top grade PSA 6). Top Topps didn't start making team cards again until 1956. Oh, and welcome!

    Welcome to the boards! As far as the cards, I would advise that you get some penny sleeves and card savers ASAP (unless I'm just not seeing them in the scans). With your renewed interest in cards, you're bound to be handling them a lot more, and like my daddy always told me protection is the most important thing, you damn accident. I'm no expert on grading vintage cards, but I would put the 53 Bowman in the 3-4 range and the 52 somewhere in the 2-3 range due to the cut/centering.

    I would be very proud to have those cards - they will look even better in a PSA holder!
    On the scanning - you must have adjusted the setting to be able to have PSA "host" them for you.
    If you were to set your scanner for more detail (200ppi e.g.) and "resize" them in the 40% range and had a place to host them, you could get better pics IMO.

    edit: JR - Nice card! Is that the only one you have?

  • Thats it and yours is a perfect 10 compared to mine!
    Thanks for the welcome!
  • Thanks for all your help guys, I greatly appreciate the input. I took the cards out of the holder to do the scan and I'll have to play around with the scanner in hopes of getting some better quality scans in the future.
