Members grade coins incorrectly ?

I just received a coin from Wybrit and I think it is graded incorrectly. My whole reason for buying the coin, well almost, was to get a handle on how a member would grade a coin compared to how I would grade the coin. Now I have to start from square one again because In My Opinion Wybrit did not put a High enough grade on the coin I received. He said EF, I say AU and high AU.

Maybe something has been missed by myself. If so please tell me what was missed. Anyway its a heck of a nice coin for 25 bucks. Thanks Much Tom.

  • He was probably using the UK system. EF in the UK is certainly not XF in the States. AU in the US system tends to show SOME wear but in the UK hardly any at all. There are no hard and fast comparison rules but this is generally true.

I was thinking this might be the case. Even if the UK system was used a XF should show a little wear shouldn't it ? Unless I am blind, which could be, this coin has very little wear if any. Would the color on a Farthing make a grade difference ? I see luster so the color is the only thing that would make it a XF IMO.

Educate me....Please. This Darkside grading is tough...image

Wybrit is a first class guy using either the US or UK system. You'll not find a more honest person to deal with.

Just what one would expect from someone who isn't a Gunners fan.

It has a trace of wear in the hair bun, but it's hard to tell unless you deal with a lot of examples of the era. Farthings minted 1860-1873 are very well struck so wear sometimes is not detected when it should be. It's 50/50 that it might even slab as MS.

Either way, I agree, it is a nice coin. It is also quite a scarce date, so enjoy!
