What is Bidpay?

I have a buyer in Greece who wants to pay me by bidpay.com eventhough my eBay listing and the invoice I sent him says PayPal, money order, or check.

Does bidpay cost me anything? Do I have to register for it? It was only a $28 item so I really don't want to go through any hassle geting the money.

Bidpay will charge the buyer's credit card for the auction and mail the seller a check. The buyer pays all the fees associated with the transaction.

I've used bidpay once each as a buyer and seller and not had a problem either way.
I'd accept the Bidpay payment, you'll come out slightly ahead compared to Paypal.

  • Don,

bidpay is a Western Union money order. A quick way to send cash worldwide, (if needed the cash is transferred within 10 mins without a check, just with a 10 digit number), but very costly for the buyer. About 5-10% accordingly, the smaller the amount, the bigger the percentage.

  • I used bid pay once for a $200 purchase. Their fees to me, the buyer were high, and for some reason after three days they sent me an e-mail that they were going to cancel the transaction for some reason. It then took a week to have the money refunded to my credit card. I had to send a Money Order before I got their refund, so I had double the purchase price out, until the refund came.

I will never use Bid Pay again.

Maybe my experience was unusual, but they will never have a second chance with my money.

As a seller, I have no problem with bidpay. You just get a money order in the mail for the exact amount. It's nice for eBay auctions. You cannot use it for anything but auction payments now. You used to be able to use it as a generic money order for anything, but now they required a valid auction # on ebay's server (Yahoo and Amazon too, I think).

Unless the rules have changed, there is a hefty currency conversion fee to the seller if you pay $ to a UK seller who wants £.

    None at all.

  • I had good success with Bidpay.
Once I used Bidpay for a electronic item to pay for a item from a seller in Canada.
Bidpay determined that the seller was a scam artist after the money order was mailed by them, then they cancelled the money order in order to stop payment on it, and refunded my money.

So I have no problem with them at all.
At first I thought the fees were a bit high, but then how much trouble is it for you to go to the USPO and buy a money order and then mail it to the seller? I think the fees are pretty reasonable in that case. Especially, since you can start the payment process off 24 hours a day right from your PC.

Its fees are indeed high, but I've only had problems with them where a check is lost in the mail or a refund is made. I had an Israeli seller return my check which I forwarded on to WU for a refund. I never received anything from them, not even responses to my emails. Of the several times one has been lost in the mail, only one has been successfully replaced.
