ATTN: LINCOLN COLLECTORS...NEED YOUR HELP

I just recently discovered a STUNNINGLY GORGEOUS RED 1964 Lincoln Proof Cent (I think it's a proof?) that I have had packed away in a Whitman 2x2 for years. Here's the kicker. The coin shines like a MS69 cent...lustrous cartweels, etc. But, it has that inkling of proof surface to it. To me, it looks like a cross between a high grade MS coin and a Proof coin. I was looking at the pop report for lincolns tonight and I noticed that there is a 1964 SMS listed?????? Is it possible that this is from a SMS? Does anyone know anything about this? I would be willing to send the coin off to someone who has a great deal of experience with lincolns to take a look at it. Pic is attached...but a picture cannot catch the unreal surfaces on this coin (all marks are on the holder).

Thanks,

Toby

  • Here's a pic of a 1964 SMS. I would guess you have a proof but who knows. Andy of Angel Dee's has had '64 sms coins in inventory and would certainly be glad to check your coin out.
  • Thanks for the pics. After looking at those SMS coins...they seem to look a little more "raw" than the coin I'm talking about. I am inclined to say that it IS a proof....but the surfaces just look a bit too satin to be a proof. The color is super consistent throughout the entire coin...it's amazing. If someone is willing to take a look at it for me...please PM me.....I would love to send it off to someone who knows a thing or two. I would hate like hell to send it off for grading...and have it come back a PR69RD REGULAR 1964 CENT. I have a 1964 in 68DCAM for my registry set and the two coins - when put side by side - are so different it's scary.
