Has anyone ever received an opened package from the mailman?

Well, I got one today. Nothing inside, 10 coins "lost" image

  • I once got a package from Colin Cooke that had been opened. All I saw inside was his catalog, then a note that read, "coin taped on page 17". It was still there, I guess my thief couldn't read. image

Sorry for your loss, that sucks!!

It's happened to me, incoming and outgoing. Fortunately, nothing has been lost yet. Sorry for you, sir.

Several times I've gotten a "bag-o-mail" from the PO. When something is opened they just
shovel everything into a bag with an apology card. The mail sometimes seems to be opened
for other reasons too, but it's unusual for something to be missing in these cases. Always
note on the insurance form if the package is opened, damaged, or looks resealed.

  • I did. They didn't even bother re-sealing it. Luckily the coin was inside.

I've had opened packages show up, but never lost a coin that way. Mine have vanished the more traditional way: they were stolen in the mail (coming and going to the UK mostly).

    Sorry about your loss.

I just got an invoice today in the mail from a dealer. The envelope was opened, then stapled shut. The dealer's return address identified him as a coin dealer, so I am wondering if somebody is casing my address and now knows that I bought these coins. Disconcerting. image

#1. Not a wise dealer, IMO.
#2. Everyone here should really only have deliveries made to a P.O. Box #.
#3. Also, it wouldn't be prudent to have Coin World, etc. delivered to your home address.

You never know who you might be dealing with. If you can get a P.O. Box at a main sorting center, all the better as this removes another layer of "handling".

HG, were these the coins which had been held up in Canadian Customs for quite some time?

Yes, several times. Only loss was from Canada. The guy put a sl****d coin in a regular envelope, no mailer or tape to secure the edges. All I received was the empty envelope, with no "sorry note" from USPS. The seller refunded my $, so no loss for me. Rather have the coin, tho. image

I hope your seller takes care of you.

    That really sucks.
    Sorry to hear that.

Well, the package lacks any customs stamp, so I guess not.

  • Yes, and within the past couple of weeks - 3 coins were sent to me in one of those "priority mail" boxes that have the self-sealing double stik tape on the lid. The tape didn't stick and the box arrived partially open. Luckily I think it became unstuck between the maile truck and my office so the coins were still in the open box. ( I have a very nice mail delivery lady) _ My advise - if you use those boxes to mail coins tape them up tight - tape is cheap!

  • I took my first hit just a few days ago myself. Bubble Pack envelope with the side slit open. I got a nice stamp on the front "Delivered without contents". So now the insurance forms and hassles begin. I lost a pair of my Palau beauties. So I guess it is kind of like the game of "Clue" --- A Postal employee with a knife...

  • Update: I went to the post office today and the Postmaster said that another man came in and reported that he recieved an opened package as well. She thinks that the package may have been sliced open when it went through the machine when it was too thick to for it.

  • I've heard that one before. In actuality if the package is too big or gets "jammed" the envelope gets obviously torn up. A knife slit however is pretty obvious for what it is. I've gotten shredded mail, wet mail and torn mail, but on three ocassions over the years I've gotten "sliced" mail. Unless it is registered there really isn't much recourse. The PO has its thieves just like everywhere else.

The sorting machines do not leave nice, neat "knife slits" if they catch one. Having two appear at the same time is just all that more suspicious. This sounds very much like an "inside job" done manually. If you haven't, I'd file a formal investigation request with the Post Master.
