Outstanding coin in phenomenal condition!!!! This is the true essence of the Darkside in my opinion--hammered gold.

    Thanks.

    I have the Phillip DeValois:

    Here's my Writeup:

KING PHILIPPE VI, DE VALOIS 1328-1350
    France - Ecu d’Or
Philippe VI, the Fortunate, (1293 - 1350) was King of France from 1328-1350. He was the son of Charles of Valois and would become the first king of the Valois Dynasty. In 1328, King Charles IV of France died without a direct descendant. Philippe was one of the two chief claimants to the throne along with King Edward III of England whose mother, Isabella of France, was the late King Charles' sister. Philippe ascended to the crown based on Salic law which forbid females and those descended in the female line to succeed to the throne. He was crowned on May 29, 1328 at the Cathedral in Reims. The French maintained that the crown could not pass through a woman. This disagreement led to the “Hundred Years’ War,” which ended with the selfless bravery of Joan of Arc.
In July, 1313, Philippe VI married Jeanne of Burgundy. In an ironic twist to his ascendancy to the throne, the intelligent, strong-willed Jeanne is said to be the brains behind the throne and the real ruler of France. The reign of Philippe VI was punctuated with crises, many of which were the result of defeats on the battlefield, in particular at the Battle of l'Ecluse in 1340 and again at Crécy in 1346. In 1348 the bubonic plague struck, killing one-third of the entire population. The labor shortage caused inflation to soar and the king attempted to fix prices, further de-stabilizing the country. On his death, France was still very much a divided country filled with social unrest.

    THIS SPECIMEN: ICG – EF45.
OBV: ARMORED KING WITH SWORD AND SHIELD SEATED ON GOTHIC THRONE
    REV: FLORIATED CROSS IN QUADRILOBE
    ATTRIB: FRIEDBERG 270(19)

I think you must mean the chaise d'or. This is what a franc a' cheval looks like -

    WOW - that is nice.

Do you have a good book on the French hammered Gold (besides Friedberg)?
  • This one is the easiest to find - Monnaies Royales Françaises 1610-1792 by Gadoury. The latest edition is 2001. The company that publishes and sells the book is located in Monaco. You can find them on Google easy enough. Gadoury also published a book on the earlier period - afraid I don't have the title handy right now - but you will see it on Gadoury's web site.

My personal favorite is Le Benelux D'Or by Delmonte. That one's not so easy to find and even a well used, older edition is rather pricey.

    Thanks for the book pointer.
    Googling.....now.
  • Slightly off topic....

A gold penny of King Coenwulf was sold to Alan Davisson of Minnesota for $411,400.

Only known example of a gold coin from this King and described as "being in a remarkable state of preservation"

From the small picture with the article, it looks magnificent.

King Coenwulf was an Anglo-Saxon king of late 8th to early 9th century Marcia.

Allan Davisson has a 1364-80 Charles V Franc á pied available in his current catalogue - Duplessy 360var, Ciani 457var. He's listing it as a near EF.
