For those who cherrypick, how many proof sets and mint sets for that matter you ussually go through just to pick one set that grade top pop?
Do you pick the entire set, or break it up and pick indiviual coins.

from date to date and mint to mint. Usually "superior" means MS-65 or better but in some
cases it will mean MS-64 or even MS-66. The percentage varies somewhat also. It will be
as high as about 6% or as low as .25% but is usually close to 2%. This applies only to the
'68 to date sets. The earlier mint sets tend to have fewer very high grade and a narrower
spread in quality. This also applies to original sets that haven't been picked over.
Proof sets are very similar at around 2% but there is less variation from date to date. There
is more variation with the grades of these high grade coins. In the earlier years they're PR-68
or better and in later years they're PR-69 or better.

The odds of an entire set being gem are extremely low if these were assembled purely
by chance. In practice though you'll find between about .1 and 1% of sets for most dates
will be all gem. I've never seen an '80 Denver packet that was all gems, though.
Edited to say: Thanks cladking

<< <i>I just went through 1060 1968 Mint sets, I have a few top pop (soon to be) ken halves (currently 10/0) and I expect 13/0 when the 14 I sent to PCGS get done, and a single Jefferson that should be an MS66FS, now 3/0 expect POP 4/0. Have not started on the dimes or Lincolns yet. That is quite a few sets so ~ 1:300 1968 sets would have a top pop coin, if my coins grade as I think they will. >>
Good luck.

Uh... Clackamas... do you have a home for that poor, single 68-S Jeff yet? If not, I'd be interested in adopting it if it makes MS65FS or higher.
And, a few years ago, I went through two mint sealed $200 bags of 1965 Jeffersons and didn't find a single coin with 5 or more steps... not 1...
But, I keep hunting!
In memory of the USAF Security Forces lost: A1C Elizabeth N. << <i>I buy 100 sets at a time to sell at the bank branch I manage. Guess who gets to go through them first? Have been able to pick out some nice sets over the years. I always keep the best 5 sets.
