What a shame this is...

I just got this card, it's a Venezuelan, and it's in decent shape, but something just doesn't look right...

The bottom edge is missing a very thin arcing section, but the wear makes it look like the trimming was done long ago, I'm thinking perhaps by a South American collector? I can't figure out how else the card would wind up like this, unless it is just a poor factory miscut, but either way, I thinking I am going to return the card for a refund. Any chance PSA would accept this and grade it?

can I ask what you paid? I like that card. That is really a dang shame. Maybe a trim turns out different on a Venezuelan?

I paid $150, which is why I hesitate to return it if there's even the slightest chance it could grade. I have to believe that this is one of the nicest examples of this card in existence, there's no paper loss or glue on the back. It would probably be a PSA 3 or 4. The other 5 of these that PSA has graded have been all 1 & 2. If I keep the card, I'm certain I could recoup my $150 easily in an auction, but I would not sell a card that has been trimmed, if indeed it has. I still haven't concluded that yet.

I don't think PSA will grade it. Not sure that it has been trimmed, but there is definantley some stock loss. It is a shame, because that is a nice card.

That is a very nice card. Could have been banded with something in a stack and it just naturally indented a little bit over the years. Of course you would think that the top would also be indented. The centering is terrific and the indentation doesn't detract that much from the card for what it is going to grade. My opinion is it's worth a shot to send it to PSA.
  • That's almost 100% trim job. I once set up a table beside a dealer who admitted using a paper cutter to trim his cards (well only did that to me). The cards all had an arch just like the card in the scan. The best thing to do is compair the edge that has the arch to the other edges. If it was trimmed it should be a different color (more white) than the other edges. I could spot them right away on OPC baseball as well as OPC hockey cards.

Check it out...if it looks more clean than the other edges it's trimmed. I have never seen a factory cut that goes in like that one unless it's from a paper cutter. Factory miscuts usually slope to the corner of a card, not in the middle.

even for a trimmed card $150 is not a total rip off.

I don't think this was ever done intentionally, in indeed it was even altered. Here's the back, if this card was cut in any way, it was done a long time ago. It almost looks like it was smushed a little in the area where it looks short. When I measure the card, it is about 1/32 under 2 1/2 in the center of the card. Looks to be about 1/64 longer when I measure near the left and right sides, which means the card in general is 1/64 short which is common for a Venezuelan, so it's basically 1/64 shorter for maybe a 1 inch section in the center.

The back makes me more inclined to say its a trim job. There is a lot of paper loss along that one edge, likely from the blade pulling the paper in the cut. I could be wrong, but that is just my.02
It is worth a shot sending to PSA, you never know.

I don't mean to give you false hope, but I did want to share this with you: I once had this same card, U.S issue, with a very slight convex shape to the same border (yours would be a concave shape). The card was thus a little oversized. Your scans do look like a trim, though. I'm wondering if the owner was trying to correct a convex border and ended up using a not-so-steady hand. Sorry you have to go thru this - is it trimmed? is it not? is it real? is it Memorex?
