$30 large cent, recolored and with rough surfaces, sells for $458. What am I missing?

1851/81 large cent

  • On Heritage's web site in "Permanent Auction Archives" the 1851/81 show that in MS63 > $400+, MS65 > $1000+, etc. The coin up for auction doesn't look close to MS to me!image

I want to say "shill bidding," but the bidders in the auction don't fit the classic shill profile. Perhaps this is a case of 3 or 4 sellers with respectable feedback shill bidding in each others' auctions?
