Drink your milk and use the milk carton to aid in photo'ing your coins...Lots 'o pics

I was reading an article on photgraphing coins and how this one collector uses a milk carton to disperse the light more evenly. Well, while I'm waiting to purchase the Nikon D70, 105mm lens (which becomes 155mm when attached to a digital camera) and the copy stand, I decided to play with idea of a milk carton. I had a difficult time with Colonials "BN".

What do you think of the pics???

My first thought is the white balance seems really out of whack.

  • mgoodm3,

    Yes 1 gallon container.

Not even close to the quality that you have in your pics. But I need to practice on the lighting.

At first I was wondering how a paper milk carton could be used for coin pics.image

I like how it shows the contrast on the Cameos. I've been experimenting on taking pics of Cameos but mine always come out with reflections (see below) So what exactly are you doing? Putting the coin in the bottom of a plastic 1 gallon jug?

I have cut the top third of the gallon jug off. I place the coin on the bottom of the jug and have the camera lens directly over the coin. Lighting is at the side of the jug. I had to adjust the lighting many times to ge the correct lighting. As you can see in the pics, they still need quite abit of light adjustment. It was just a experiment!

    Details of the setup? Please?
Family, kids, coins, sports (playing not watching), jet skiing, wakeboarding, Big Air....no one ever got hurt in the air....its the sudden stop that hurts. I hate Hurricane Sandy. I hate FEMA and i hate the blasted insurance companies.
  • The pics show some promise, and I'm sure will improve with practice - but the title of this thread is really exceptional.

Take a gallon milk jug (empty is preffered) and cut the top third off. Place the jug under camera which is facing down into jug. Place coin in bottom of jug. Place lighting to the side of the jug. I had 2 lights with GE reveal bulbs. Lighting does not have to be right up against jug. You'll need to play with the lighting. image

Thanks. The last 2 pics you posted look great to me.
  • How does it do with toned coins?????? Can you get the color to show as well as luster?

What about slabbed coins??? Shouldn't be any glare.

I like this and will have to try it this weekend!

    Thanks for the great idea~!
