Feedback Question

I just won an item and paid right away. Then I got an email from the seller that says this:

"We post positive feedback after our winners have indicated satisfaction by
posting positive feedback to our account."

I don't really like the way this sounds. I mean, I Paypal'd less than 24 hours after winning the auction. Isn't my job done? Shouldn't I get positive feedback? Why should he hold my feedback hostage?

I agree - they shouldn't! Having said that - what is your alternative? The only thing you may consider is never doing business with the guy again. And, let him know about it after the transaction is completed.
    What do you think?

  • I have always left feedback as soon as a buyer pays. However, I can't say that I blame him/her. There are alot of ebayers that don't view feedback as important as others do. I usually have no problem getting feedback from sellers. I always pay with paypal and ask for feedback on the receipt. I've only had to ask a seller for feedback outside of the receipt on a couple of occasions. Buyers are altogether different. I usually have to bug buyers a few times before they go back and leave feedback. Put another way, everyone I have bought from has left feedback for me, that can't be said about everyone that has bought from me. One that comes to mind is Allstar Cards out of Kansas. They bought a 2001 Sweet Spot Albert Pujols RC (PSA 9) from me and never left feedback. I emailed them several times to no avail. Nothing wrong with the transaction, quick pay and quick ship, they just never left any or responded to any of the emails for that matter. Oh well. At least getting that message gives you an indication that the seller values feedback. Or, they may have been burned in the past by leaving positive feedback only to get negative feedback in return. That way, if they get negative, they can still leave negative in return (which I don't necessarily agree with either, but it happens). image

  • As a seller I always leave FB same day or day after I mailed the package. If they don't leave me one fine with me (don't have anything to hide or done nothing wrong). Some buyers they take a while to leave FB and some don't leave at all.

As a buyer, I don't leave FB unless seller leaves one for me. One seller asked me why I didn't leave a FB. I said cause I didn't get one from you. So seller left FB and I did the same.

I ignore that and will not leave FB.

fsjeter, most powersellers who use different ebayIDs for buying don't leave FBs.

I always leave feedback after I get the item I bought. But one thing I don't do is bug the other person if they didn't
give me a feedback. I know it was rude for the other person not to give a feedback, but I think it's kinda rude to keep
bugging the other person to give you feedback. Just my opinion. I probably would have 100 more positive feedbacks
on eBay if I did that. But as the other person holding there feedback untill you post something isnt' right. They got
your payment so they should leave feedback. Now with Paypal as payment I can see them holding it untill the
transaction is completed fully. I've read the horror stories about people paying with paypal, getting the items and
then something goes wrong, they do a charge-back and all hell breaks loose. Maybe that is the reason they are
    holding the feedback.

I personally don't leave feedback for every single transaction that is completed successfully. If the seller takes a while to ship the product or if it is packaged insecurely, I will often not leave feedback. Those offenses may not deserve a negative or even a neutral feedback, but I also don't feel obligated to leave a positive when I wasn't that pleased with some portion of the transaction.

However, as a buyer, don't I deserve feedback whether or not I leave a positive first? I did my job. He can't complain about it, as I paid about 15 hours after the auction ended. What could I possibly do now that will result in him giving me a negative feedback that is not 100% retalitory? I guess I could try to file a false paypal complaint after I receive the item, but I could still do that that after leaving my positive feedback and then getting the positive from him.

This seems flat out wrong and I'm not really happy about it. Now, I'm sure that this guy's not alone and that lots of dealers dot his. But, this guy is so blatant about it that it pisses me off. I guess I'd be happier if he didn't tell me that he was a jerk.

Here's an email that I just composed, but haven't sent. I thought I'd run it past the crew to see what you think. Am I being fair? Would you be pissed if you received it? Should I wait a few days to make sure the item's in the mail before I send it?

    (begin draft of email)

I have a question about this email. Before I get to the point, I want to make it clear that I was thrilled to win the auction, happy to pay for it and am very much looking forward to the item I won. I also expect to leave you positive feedback as soon as I receive the item.

However, your email did raise a question. Your email says that you will not leave me a positive feedback until I leave one for you. That sees very odd to me. I have already paid you and done all that is required of me in the transaction, correct? It seems to me that you already know enough about me and my dealing in this transaction to leave me a positive feedback, right? It kind of seems that you are holding my feedback hostage, which doesn't seem proper to me.

I paid less than 24 hours after the auction's close, so what could I do from this point forward to justify receiving a negative feedback from you?

Will someone please explain to me why if you are only on eBay to buy stuff then what does it matter whether or not u get feedback. If you are the winning bidder on an item you win it whether your feedback is 10 or 10,000. Seller's are justified to hold a buyer's feedback 'hostage'. There are a lot of stupid people out there who will leave BS negative feedback for a BS reason. A buyer with a few negs can still outbid anyone if they desire to do so, a seller with a few negs may not get the sale they deserve. A retalitory negative may be the sellers only defense.

Think about it. Feedback is overwhelming used for buyers to evaluate sellers. Not vice-versa.

defense for what? getting paid for an auction almost the instant the auction ended?

basically this seller does not have confidence in his/her merchandise.
sellers that do, leave pos feedback at the time of payment.

edited to add.....buyers should not leave feedback if the seller did not. a simple email could be used to let the seller know that the card had arrived and was found to be satisfactory. the buyer then could say as soon as feedback is left it will then be reciprocrated. <sp>
    Good for you.
  • the only time it't important to get feedback is when you are new, some sellers won't let zero or low feedback buyers bid.seller feedback is important but a lot of bidders ignor it.here's an exampleText seller has lousy feedback, he's selling a reprint, also bidding on his own auction with fake buyer to raise price and yet there's a few dummies bidding (over $30.00 for a 5 cent reprint.)

  • << <i>A retalitory negative may be the sellers only defense. >>

I don't think this does any good anyway. If I see a seller with X amount of negs, it isn't going to make any difference to me whether the seller left a neg for those buyers. In fact, retaliatory negs make me think even less of the seller. Because a seller would have left a positive had the transaction concluded with the payment, retaliatory negs are dishonest and unethical. I think ebay should hide the buyer's fb until the seller posts fb to the buyer.

In this case the seller even has the audacity to tell you he is blackmailing you for fb. I would neg this seller if I could stomach the obligatory retaliation (which I can't). Its either that or create another user id, win another of his auctions, and neg his ass then! image

    Yup, I agree with that.
It's come to a point for me now where I really don't even care
about feedback anymore. As a buyer, I always pay with paypal.
Sometimes they leave it for quick payment, a lot of times they don't.
I never ask for feedback.....just send me my sh*t. If they post feedback for me...fine, I'll leave them nice feedback. If they don't post anything and ask to post for them and they'll reciprocate....I don't even bother to respond to that request and I usually don't return to their auctions.

agreed.. and contrary to popular belief, the transaction IS NOT always positive just because the bidder pays.. and just because the bidder pays does NOT mean they automatically deserve good feedback..

Also, as a buyer, I immediately leave feedback and remove the items from ebays "Items I won" page.. I dont have time to search through my feedback and see if the seller has left feedback for me.. i really dont care.. but they got my card to me, and i'm happy, and i'm leaving them feedback.. 99.9% of the time, they follow-up with good feedback..

Steve, I disagree.. I think its more about having a lack of confidence in alot of dumbass eBay bidders.. look at
this.. this seller got a neutral (on 9/13) because the buyer is upset about Art Monks rookie year? and then he got retaliated on by a non-paying bidder.. in both cases the seller left feedback first, and in both cases the seller got screwed..

pandrews - the seller left feedback AFTER the neutral (and I agree that the buyer was a twit for leaving a neutral, since the auction never said it was a rookie), and a NPB is entirely different - the seller can't leave feedback after payment when it doesn't arrive.

I understand your point but I still believe the only thing the buyer can truly be given FB for is quick payment; the rest is a flaw in the way the whole thing works IMO.
If I pay - my job is over and deserve to be given FB - everything you say is an anomaly in the system and should be addressed and corrected without having to pay 20$ or something.
I know you run a good operation and this is annoying - in that sense I'm with you. People are doing this to me everyday outside of ebay - a woman complained to my receptionist that she shouldn't have to pay the balance and that I should consider "writing it off" - I'ld like to write her off!!!!

My 2 cents on this issue:

This is a favorite issue on these boards, since it is true that, in a perfect world, the seller should leave positive feedback after the buyer has "done his part", which is to pay. However, the transaction isn't over til, as they say, it's over - and a buyer deserves negative feedback if he turns into an imbecile upon receipt of his winnings. Of course, I know I am never that imbecile, but the seller doesn't. Given this, I've decided there are two sides to resolving this issue: Either I do what feels right to me, or I rail over what the seller does that doesn't feel right. I used to leave positive feedback for only those sellers that have left me positive feedback, but it infuses so much negativity into my life to continually check if that idiot left me postitive feedback yet, that now I just leave feedback if I got what I paid for. 9 times out 10, the seller leaves me positive feedback right afterward. Life is too short to obsess over who goes first.

Mark, my guess is that you're right...the seller normally waits to see his positive feedback and then reciprocates. Perhaps what got me is that this seller is so blatant about his holding of my feedback hostage. He actually told me that's what he's doing. I probably shouldn't be more upset at the guy that's upfront about what he's doing than I would be about the guy that says nothing, but I simply couldn't believe it when I got the email.

One way or another, I'm going to contact the seller about his feedback policy...I'll let the boards know what kind of response I get.
