I Cherrypicked and Bought 12 Top 100 Morgan VAMs at the Shop Today!

RampageRampage Posts: 9,448 ✭✭✭✭✭
I paid no premium for any of them. I looked through 5 boxes of about 100 Morgans and found the following coins. Pretty much what I did was take my Top 100 book with me and sat down with my 16X doublet and started looking.

1) 1878-P 7TF VAM 141 in uncirculated.
2) 1882-O/S VAM 3 in very fine.
3) 1882-O/S VAM 4 in fine/very fine.
4) 1882-O/S VAM 3 The rare early die state in uncirculated.
5) 1886-P VAM 1A, I think. I need to take a good scan and post it for the experts. Uncirculated.
6) 1886-P VAM 17 in uncirculated.
7) 1886-P VAM 17 in uncirculated.
8) 1889-P VAM 22, formerly VAM 5A in uncirculated, toned.
9) 1891-P VAM 2 in uncirculated.
10) 1897-P VAM 6A in uncirculated.
11) 1900-P VAM 24, formerly VAM 11 in uncirculated.
12) 1900-O VAM 15 in uncirculated.

I was quite excited when I found the first one. Even more excited when I found the second and third one. They just kept coming! I did not want to spend so much money today, but I just could not help myself......image

Cheers, Richard.

  • Nice finds!

My local coin shop does'nt recognize VAMs either, and if a coin is tarnished/toned he knocks a little off the price.

WOW! they let you bring a book in the shop for reference and use it to cherry pick them! and they sold you 12 coins verses kicking you out of the store for trying to pull somethiong over on them! What a concept- just think by letting you look at coins you bought a whole bunch of them and they made all kinds of $$'S! I wish I could find a shop or two like this. Maybe other shop owners will read this and realize they could be selling coins instead of pushing customers away. It sure is fun searching for coins like this and it looks like you did rather well. image mike

Quite frankly, I expected to find nothing. When I found the first one, I thought, "well, they must have missed this one". When they just kept popping up, I was thrilled to death.

And, after I paid, one of the three shop owners said, "now that you own them, what did we sell you"? They know I love varieties, so they do not mind me looking. They are actually happy when people find something good. I showed them a couple of the varieties and they thought it was cool, but they said it once and they said it again, "you can have all the varieties we have". The said they did not have the time to sit down and look at every coin that comes through the shop so closely.

It depends on the VAM. So have little to no premium, others have large premiums. The goal is to find the VAMs with large premiums, but pay no premiums when you are cheryy picking. image

I did recently pay a small premium for an 1887 VAM 1A (Donkey Tail) in ANACS XF45. The premium, to me, was allot of money for a common coin, but the variety is not so common and does command a premium. I have been told that when I decide to sell it, I will do well for what I paid. image

I would like to know where to get an updated VAM price guide, though.

Nice Job Rampage!! One of these days I'm going to invest in a VAM book and several other error books. There is a lot of raw material out there in my opinion. Chris

  • WOW - What a great way to spend an afternoon. You should kiss the owner of that shop! Many owners don't let someone have that kind of "inspection time", i.e. they get pushy, somewhat rude, etc. I hope that the guy keeps getting in lots of Morgans and you keep getting lots of VAMs. Way to go!!
