I paid no premium for any of them. I looked through 5 boxes of about 100 Morgans and found the following coins. Pretty much what I did was take my Top 100 book with me and sat down with my 16X doublet and started looking.
1) 1878-P 7TF VAM 141 in uncirculated.
2) 1882-O/S VAM 3 in very fine.
3) 1882-O/S VAM 4 in fine/very fine.
4) 1882-O/S VAM 3 The rare early die state in uncirculated.
5) 1886-P VAM 1A, I think. I need to take a good scan and post it for the experts. Uncirculated.
6) 1886-P VAM 17 in uncirculated.
7) 1886-P VAM 17 in uncirculated.
8) 1889-P VAM 22, formerly VAM 5A in uncirculated, toned.
9) 1891-P VAM 2 in uncirculated.
10) 1897-P VAM 6A in uncirculated.
11) 1900-P VAM 24, formerly VAM 11 in uncirculated.
12) 1900-O VAM 15 in uncirculated.
I was quite excited when I found the first one. Even more excited when I found the second and third one. They just kept coming! I did not want to spend so much money today, but I just could not help myself......
Cheers, Richard.

My local coin shop does'nt recognize VAMs either, and if a coin is tarnished/toned he knocks a little off the price.
And, after I paid, one of the three shop owners said, "now that you own them, what did we sell you"? They know I love varieties, so they do not mind me looking. They are actually happy when people find something good. I showed them a couple of the varieties and they thought it was cool, but they said it once and they said it again, "you can have all the varieties we have". The said they did not have the time to sit down and look at every coin that comes through the shop so closely.
I just need the name of that shop.
<< <i>what's the premium on VAMs (for a newbie on this issue)? >>
It depends on the VAM. So have little to no premium, others have large premiums. The goal is to find the VAMs with large premiums, but pay no premiums when you are cheryy picking.
I would like to know where to get an updated VAM price guide, though.
