What happened to all the Merc Collectors?

I know I haven't been here like I used to be, but where is everyone else?

I did manage to go to a show last week. Not a single dime of note. The only thing I found that is on my upgrade list was a 1921-D VF20. I didn't get it, I want a higher grade. All I picked up was a proof set.

Now that my set is complete (although I need some upgrades) it just isn't as much fun. I am not having much luck finding anything of note!

Still here and lurking around. Basically in the same boat you are, cant find anything and when it is found someone always bids more than myself. Maybe its time to quit being thrifty. Heck some raw coins even brought higher bids on Ebay.

Have got a couple of Darkside things though.....image

    Ken,

I hope all is well with you. I know what you mean with the prices. I sold a few coins on ebay and did better than I expected on some (less on a few others). It just seem what I want just isn't around. The local dealers here don't seem to have anything much at all.

Tony atleast you have local dealers....image I drove to Portland yesterday, 360 miles round trip, and spent more money on gas than coins. There is a show down there Thanksgiving weekend so maybe a round disk or two may be found. Coins that are needed are around but so far the look is wrong for what I like. Maybe thrifty and picky will both go out the window. Its the pits to never add a coin.

BTW all is Cool, and I mean Cool. Its been in the low 20's temperature wise a couple of mornings here already. This was reserved for January in the valley.

    Ken,

I am happy that there are four dealers within 10 miles, and probably another 10 dealer if that range is increased to 35 miles.

20 degrees? I think winter is rearing its ugly head. I hate the cold and the snow it brings! The forcast last week said we were supposed to get snow last Thursday. Thank God it didn't happen! It will be here way too soon for me.

There are lots of secret Merc collectors who buy at auction, and are willing to pay whatever it takes to buy nice dimes.
There is solid demand for these little gems..
I advise merc collectors to buy now,as the prices are going to go up soon.

I'm still accepting donations to my set just send them to me so you don't have to go thru the work of putting them your set. All that work can be left to me with you donations. LOL

I have a new Merc to add to my set, but when I tried to do so over the weekend I found that it was already in someone else's set! image I've sent an e-mail to PCGS, along with a photo of the coin that also showed yesterday's newspaper (to prove the date), so the culprit should be notified.

Getting settled in a new home in FLA; no more of that 20 degree stuff for me, just an occasional hurricane or two. image I bought some new furniture yesterday. It was either that or spend it on a '21-P Merc, but sitting on a dime isn't very comfortable. image

A lawn chair and a box would have worked for me. The 21P would have been higher on the priority list. image

  • I started a merc collection and I'm going at it backwards. I need one more for the 40 - 45 short set (a 42-s fb), then I'll start the 34 - 40. I'm crossing my fingers that by the time I finish that portion prices on the earlier keys come down some. But I don't think they will.image

    Keith,

The 42-S can be a tough coin in full bands. I want to upgrade to a FB coin at some point.

fcloud: Up a litle early this morning.

We merc collectors are still very much around. Just trying to get other coins and sets while we have a chance.

Mercs have been taking a breather for several years now. However, the keys are as strong as ever.

I suspect that the 1945-P FB are about to double in price in the next 12 months in any grade. along with an increase of 30%+ in the next 12 months for the early key dates.

    Oreville,

The market is steady unless one of us needs the coin, in that case there seems to be alot of action for those tough dates.

wingnut f/k/a wingedliberty, I hear he got out of control over his views on issues of our times and got himself permanently John Birched out of here.

I wonder what this one will end up at and what is "Virtually "Full Bands""? Either is or isn't.

  • From the pic, it doesn't look FB. This is one that I would have to see in hand.image And if it is FB, I'm sure it will go out of sight!
