Three New, Raw Morgans--DMPL, Nice, and Whizzed/Cleaned (?) [warning dial-uppers]

I picked these up at the show last weekend. I just got my camera back from being cleaned, so here are the pictures...

1885-P. Looks MS64 to me, maybe a small shot at 65, but unlikely.

1898-O. Lower-MS, DMPL. The cheek has a few cuts. One, which you can see a little bit, seems to have a touch of what seems like green chalk--any idea what it is and how to get rid of it? My first attempts at photoing it didn't work.

1899-O. Here's the loser. In the show light, it looks really clean and like a steal. Got home and put it under the light. I think it's been whizzed (or at least cleaned)... any confirmation of that?

Nice coins! I tend to agree with your grade of MS-64 on the first. The second one looks like a 61 to me, but it could be a 62 on a good day. I also agree that the last one seems to be cleaned, especially after looking at the picture showing the hairlines. Overall, though, not too bad.
  • Nice coins....Yep the last one is cleaned.

I don't think the `85 can make 64. Not with PCGS anyway. Interesting clashed dies though.
    I brake for ear bars.
  • I agree with Lava. The '85 has the overall marks and look of a high-end 64 but the 2 deep reeding marks on the key FOCAL AREA of the cheak, lower it to 63. I've given up guessing what PCGS will call PL verses DMPL, so the minimum grade on coin #2 in MS 62- PL. At $35 each, both are very nice values. The absolute tip-off that coin #3 was "whizzed" is to look at Liberty's hair. The hair is almost never so shiney or "PL" fron the mint. I'd keep it to remind me what a whizzed Morgan looks like w/o magnification.

I would guess the 85 is a ms63- too many face hits for a higher grade. The second is probably a ms62 or so- the last interests me, because the first photos you have make it look uncleaned and frosty. I wonder if most whizzing jobs are that subtle? I thought they were a bit more blatent.....
