Jefferson Guys - 68-S FS question NGC vs. PCGS

I was lucky enough to find a FS 1968-S Jefferson that has 6 complete steps. I need the cash so I want to sell it at auction. Since it would FS at NGC and obviously PCGS would it be better to have it in a POP 1 NGC holder or a POP 4 pcgs holder?

Thanks

Brian

BTW I will try to take scans but steps don't show up well even when they are full on my scanner.

Uhhhhhh... wow? I guess those rolls finally arrived?

I have no idea how to answer your question, but that is one NICE '68-S. Congrats on the score!

    hey Brian

that's a tough issue in FS and it shouldn't really matter which holder it's in provided the steps are unbridged and complete with no nicks whatsoever. as described, it should bring top dollar in either holder from a true Jefferson collector but would return in a heartbeat with any weakness/bridge/flaw. what's the grade estimate??

the only advantage i could see is with NGC the buyer would know the step count---5 or 6.

  • As for the grade... it is a liner 65/66, could go either way, the coin looks like it was struck with proof like SMS die but has some spotting from the mint cello packaging but is fairly clean from marks. Tough call really.

Wow! I've never seen a 1968-S with steps like that. Or, for that matter, any from 1968 through 1970.

For that reason I'd go with NGC. If they designate 6 steps, you have got yourself one heck of a find.

I think PCGS should start 5 & 6 steps designation for Jeffs. This desigantion is very significant in modern Jeffs due to the commonality of FS in recently minted Jeffs. JMHO

I agree, I think it would be most desirable as a Pop-1 in an NGC 6-step holder. If someone wants it for a PCGS Registry, they can cross it - I wouldn't think an NGC 6-step coin would have any problem crossing to PCGS as FS.

    Beautiful.

Probably a 66 NGC would sell better than a 65 PCGS.

I agree with everyone else that it would be best in a 6FS NGC slab BUT, it is my personal opinion based on the pic, that NGC would not give it a 6FS. It appears that the 6th step doesn't completely go from side to side, especially from the third pillar to the fourth and this is a requirement for a step to count as a step with NGC.

I think you'd be better off going with PCGS as it is most probably a 5FS (again, based only on the pic). Nice steps for such a hard date/mm regardless!

As for PCGS going with a 5FS or a 6FS label....cold day in he11 before they follow NGCs lead even tho it would benefit them as well as the FS Jeff collectors out there like myself.
Everything starts and everything stops at precisely the right time for precisely the right reason.
  • I'd rather have the PCGS designtation. If any standardization regarding steps can be established later, then fine: you could resubmit. At any rate I'd love to add this one to my collection. Congrats on your find - image
