Maundy Sets? Ijust found about 25 sets in their original little velvet boxes that I bought about 20 years ago. THey range from George III (early 1800s) to Edward VII - anybody know what these things are currently worth (They're all Proof or proof-like and original toned sets.
I've just looked carefully at about 10 of the sets and taken some photos which I'll post later tonight or in the morning:
I'm not sure if these are proofs of PL MS coins - virtually all have Proof or PL surfaces.
The 1800 is AU/Unc. but I believe that it is quite nice for an 18th Maundy set (the 19th century started on 1/1/1801)
The 1854 is Gem AND beautifully toned - Greens and Rose Magenta - the 3d is PL and Cameo so with the toning it's outstanding.![image](https://us.v-cdn.net/6027503/uploads/expressions/face-icon-small-cool.gif)
The 1855 is also Gem, but the toning is not quite as nice.
The 1873 is Choice (63 quality)
The 1877 gem or near Gem
1885 Choice (63 quality)
1888 Choice to near gem (63/64 quality)
1891 Choice (63 quality)
1896 Choice (63+ quality)
1897 near Gem (64+ quality)
1898 near Gem (64 quality)
1899 near Gem Nicely toned (64+ quality)
1900 Choice to near gem (63/64+ quality)
1901 near Gem
The 1903 & 1904 are Choice - MS63+ quality
The 1905, 1906, 1907 & 1908 are all Gem or near Gem sets with muted toning. (65/64 quality)
The 1932 George V is a Gem set - mostly untoned.
The 1854 and 1855 are is NFS for sure, probably the best of the sets, particularly for eye appeal. I'll probably pick out a couple of each of the types and sell the rest - so the 1800 & the 1932 are NFS. Too tired to figure out the rest right now - there's 4 coins per set so Obv/rev X 4 X21 sets = too many coins to look at - I think I know how those graders feel![image](https://us.v-cdn.net/6027503/uploads/expressions/face-icon-small-frown.gif)
The problem with these coins is that they are so darn small (now I know why I've graduated to toned Morgan dollars - I can see the darn things without a magnifying glass.

Most Boxes say Spink & Son - But several have no name, and 1 or 2 have other names of whomever made the Boxes - Some of these sets are beautifully toned (nearly all are toned, but some are nicer than others) and about half are Gem quality - the rest are choice - from my 1st look none are less than choice, (the exception may be the George III, which may be only Unc+) THere may be a few more as they were in a large box that was full & I used to buy these whenever I went to the NY International show or to a fall show in London back in the late 80's - I'll try and image a few - but those suckers are small!
THe ones with ** or * were exceptionally nice or nicely toned - but I haven't looked at them all becasue the only boxes I opened were the ones w/o dates and then I only started noting the nice ones after I was half done.

I'm actually quite democratic (small d everyone) in what I collect, for example, I collect medals of the British Kings (and the occasional Queen), early 19th century British Gold (love those 1/3 guineas), Early British Coppers (George III, mostly). I've collected coins since before I was 5, - started with Lincoln cents, and since the early 80's I've bought all sorts of ecletic stuff. If it's round, sometimes oval, if it looks interesting, I'll probably collect it - I also like Ancient coins of various varieties, but I particularly like Ancient gold. Here's a couple of examples:
THis is interesting as the Emperor shown is Commodous - the same Emperor in the Movie "The Gladiator" - Commodous believed he was Hercules re-incarnated and as you can see he has the Lion skin that Hercules killed draped over his head and on the reverse the symbols of Hercules - Commodous actually dressed as Hercules and fought in the Collisium in Rome - but he DIDN'T loose, so that part of the Gladiator was fiction.
Here's another interesting coin - struck about 500 years earlier: Does anyone konw who the portrait is?
BTW what's this "lightside" / "darkside" stuff anyway?
As for the Maundy sets, I'm probably going to keep a few of the really nicely toned ones - just because nice ones are hard to find, and sell the remainder - I was planning on taking several to the Michigan State show (Starts Friday after THanksgiving) and leave them with a dealer I know who sells Ancient and World coins - But as there seems to be an interest here, I'll go thru them and list the ones that I'm going to offer for sale here first
- Or am I supposed to go over the For sale forum? I see that one of our erstwhile Forum members is always getting threads removed if coins that are for sale are mentioned, or pictures shown - so if this Board is hypersensitive, I'll post the list where ever it is that they are supposed to be posted.
