Who would you nominate? Would it be a person, dealer, historian, grading companyimage? Please include a BRIEF description of your nominee(s). What impact has your choice had on our little corner of the world?

Russ, that guy will NEVER have an impact on coin collecting. I'm told he has trouble remembering his forum log-in password. He can't even count to 21 unless he is naked.image

I really want to know who has had a dramatic influence on where we are today.

The person who comes to mind immediately is Dave Bowers. QDB is not only a prolific writer, he's a good one. And he has a heart for education. He writes a column for Coin World which is always down-to-earth, and I doubt he's doing it for the money. I guess I have a soft spot for the authors because they are permanently contributing to the welfare of the hobby. Their work will be accessible to anyone who wants to read it in the future.

Dave's books reflect a genuine love of collecting and his enthusiasm for it.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Obviously, Tassa can't keep a secret, Frank.

Admittedly, I am fairly new to this hobby. Without drinking any kool-aid, I would certainly think David Hall has had a huge impact. He saw a need to standardize grading 20 years ago, not knowing how valuable this service would become with all of the sight un-seen trading that goes on now.

Two others that quickly come to mind are Rick Tomaska and James Wiles.

Don't have a problem with these other than John Fraud?? (might mean John Ford. If so, I agree) and Teddy Roosevelt. I would replace him with William Sheldon. I am also not sure about the Clapps--no problem with them--just not sure about first ten places.

Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.
  • Fords complete numismatic knowledge is equal or greater than QDB....The clapps, especially Clapp sr. was the greatest collector who ever lived, and he collected in an era without proliferated information or dealer experts. My original nominees were no particular order.

    Who is John Fraud?

  • John J Fraud....at a coinshow in the early seventies, several dealer pranksters altered Fords sign at a coinshow to John J Fraud...it stuck..............................I thought one nominee should come from the designers/mint officials/ politicians sector, and Roosy always seemed to have impacted coinage the most from that group.
