1811 Capped Bust Half Question (Large Picture)

Seller states this is EF-48+ to AU and that it is a O-109 variety. Is this a common variety? Tried searching the net but couldn't find info. Thoughts on coin and where I can find info on varieties. Thanks, Lee

1811 O.109 is R.2, common. Neat reverse die crack. Nice EF40.

What they said. Nice EF. The heavy die crack on the reverse resulted in the weakly struck obverse. When I get home, I will try and find a photo of my 109. On it the die crack is so heavy that the coin can actually rocks back and forth when laid on a flat surface.

Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

image Thanks Guy's! How about a website for variety types? Lee
  • cleaned XF40 in my opinion, seller might try to say , "coin has luster" close to au, but in my opinion its just a 40 coin and the cleaning dont help it any. As for the crack affecting the obverse strike , i dont buy that for a second. the crack is to small in that stat to affect the entire surface of hte obverse and the reverse strike isnt that great either, noting the left wing details.

PS possibly some EV damage on the reverse noting the streaky black lines, maybe was buried.

The Overton book is the standard that is used for variety attribution in the early half dollar (1794-1836) series. It also contains much more information than simply how to identify varieties and their relative rarities. Get the book, it costs about $50.

It looks to me like it was cleaned a long time ago, but the retoning is somewhat attractive. I can live with the black streak on the reverse and the weakness in strike. Overall, I like it- it's got some nice, subtle, pastel coloring in the fields........

The very scarce variety of this date, especially in high grde, is known as the 1811/10, or "punctuated date." It has a period between the 8 and 1. The last time I checked less than 10 pieces were graded mint state by PCGS and NGC combined. There were 2 MS64's, no MS65's, and a lone MS66 owned by a forum member. image
