1952 Topps Set on Ebay

A guy I know just bought this set, and I wonder about its authenticity, especially the Mantle. I'm not an expert on the 52 set, and was hoping someone could give their opinion on this one. Thanks to anyone for their help.

  • I'm not a 52 expert by any stretch...but I think you're friend is in trouble. The seller has been NARU'd, the Mantle looks like a fake (perfect centering, pure white borders, the total opposite of all the other cards shown...). I'd hold onto my $3650 for a while.

  • I am not an expert, but the Mantle looks way better than all the other cards which makes me suspicious. Yeah, all the cards show a bunch of wear, except the most expensive one, which looks near perfect. And then he says it would only grade a "low" 5. Why is that, based on the scans he posted?

I am looking for Nolan Ryan cards, esp. OPC and rare oddball issues, graded or not. Also I need quite a few 1956 Topps, PSA 6 or higher

    Current Sets in Progress:
1956 Topps Master Set PSA 6 or better
    1978 Topps PSA 9 or 10
    1981 Donruss Golf PSA 9 or 10
    1989 Upper Deck PSA 9 or 10
    Nolan Ryan Master Set
    Pete Rose Master Set
  • As an addition, it looks like a hijacked dormant account. The guy hasn't done a transaction other than this one in over a year and has feedback rating of 4 with only 2 sales, yet sells a 52 topps set. He changed the ID from "craigfasino" to "vballgod15" on Oct 4th too.

Not a chance I would send the money, I would doubt he even gets any cards let alone legit ones.

Since your friend is new to ebay (based on his feedback) you might want to warn him about these kind of auctions out there.

  • Thanks, guys. Those were exactly my thoughts regarding it. The fact that he is NARU and the Mantle looking so nice, were red flags to me, too. My friend told me he only bought it because the guy lived close to us (about 1 hour away). But then he told me the guy wouldn't let him pick it up, he would only mail it. Unfortunately, he sent him a certified check, i believe, which I am going to advise him to cancel out if possible.

The cards that are missing are #'s 46-54 (somehow that whole page in the book disappeared when i got it from my grandfather), #250,333,392,394,407.

That is 9 cards a 52 set does not have 9 cards to a page, if i remm the 52's could sit only in the 8 pocket pages. i believe the whole set to be a reprint set at best and at worst that auction to be a total scam.
    Good for you.
  • If it was me and my $3600 I would drive there in person demand the check and not leave without it. Since you know where the dude is, there is probably a way to get the money back.

Banks wont cancel certified checks though (At least Bank of America won't), so he is out of luck there. Those checks are certified funds and are as good as cash.

Correct, up to 1956, there are only 8 card pages because of the size. Unless of course the cards are reprints which always seem to be smaller, or else, maybe he did you a favor and trimmed them up so they would fit nicely in a notebook for you!

from what i understand a certified check that is under 5 k can be stopped payment on. go to the issuing bank and see what they will do. jp morgan chase does this. good luck, if that doesnt work bring a cop to the guys house.
    Good for you.
  • Actually, he mailed a bank cashier's check on Monday. He has contacted the bank, and security is working on it. Hopefully, it hasn't yet been cashed. I'll let everyone know how it turns out. Thanks again to everyone for your input.

This is so very sad. I hope there is a good ending.

There are red flags all over that auction. The pictures are scans an digital photos of varying quality and the cards are presented differently, like the photos have been assmbled from different sources. The Mantle is nice, but the borders of the photo cropped, and he says it would grade in the "low 5" range, which is kind of an odd description. Seller has had no activity for 2 years. Cards from g'father. Nope, to be avoided.

Rare Grady Sizemore parallels, printing plates, autographs

    Nothing on ebay
  • all i can say is ......OUCH!!!
  • I would wait by his mailbox and crack his skull if need be...just my thoughts!

I rember this auction from about month ago when this guy tried to rip someone else off, cant believe I found the link

    Link 1

.....and the link to the auction where the original digital images came from.

    Link 2
    A's World Championships-1910, 1911, 1913, 1929, 1930, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1989
  • Good job, athleticsfan. My friend told me about the original auction that he had bid in (under his daughter's ebay name) and that the high bidder"didn't come through", so the auction was relisted. He was then thrilled that he got it for $3650.
The links you posted will show the authorities even more conclusively that this auction was an outright scam, worthy of prosecution.

  • Interestingly enough, the ebay user id "italianstud12" is also NARU'd and ran the bidding up the above "LINK 1". Take a look at his feedback of 3. The last item he received feedback from was the seller of this scam set for none other than a "vintage card blowout" that contains a 52 Mantle. Also, notice that vballgod15 left positive feedback 24 hrs after winning the auction. Fast shipping!
