JERRY WEST VS. CARMELO ANTHONY

There are less West Rookie cards in PSA 8 than there are Anthony Exquisite Rookies. Yet Anthony sells for about $1,200 while you can get a West rookie for around $1,000.

Anthony is shooting about 30% from the floor and in my opinion won't ever sniff the hall of fame (although he might sniff some herb). Plus, how many thousands of "limited autos" do you think there will be by the time Anthony gets done.

Comments

  • Anthony has potential to be a superstar and is playing now. West is in a office and is the NBA logo. Collectors want to invest in a player that they watch and can see grow.

I know the West is a solid investment and will rise in value over a long period of time. If Antony explodes and leads his team to the playoffs his card will go up faster.

I'd rather have the West by the way......

Nosoupyou - I often laugh at these comparisons. One day Anthony MIGHT have a career as great as West. However, based on the numbers you have presented you would think Anthony already had won a Championship and piled up MVP awards. I cannot think of an NBA rookie card in the last 20 years where the card held its value. Jordan, Bird, Magic, Hakeem, Ewing, Pippen, Stockton, Malone, Hill, Duncan, Bryant, Shaq, all of those rookie cards were valued higher than they are currently. Collectors get caught up in the spur of the moment. Kudos to anybody who can buy modern rookie cards and turn a profit long term.

Just another example of how a lot of the modern stuff is speculative and a factor of demand. The West card will hold steady, but who knows on the Carmeloman.
Proud of my 16x20 autographed and framed collection - all signed in person. Not big on modern - I'm stuck in the past!

albert pujols? he seems to be a modern card that kept going up. im sure some people turned profit off him!
david wright is another that comes to mind his autos are in midrange from where they will be in 2-3 years.
  • Aro, love the Russell pic! The key to what you said is that turning a profit "long term" is impossible in most cases. I understand why people buy the Anthony, Wade and Lebron rookies because they are the flavor of the day and it really is a form of gambling. Vintage rookies like the West are just too safe and secure for a lot of people. If you are going to spend the money though, why not put into guys like West.

Like the McGwire rookies. I made huge profits off those. Tons of mom & pops collectors bought them for $250-$300 and thought they would be worth thousands by now. I was smarter then that, I pulled all of them from my sets and sold them, then replaced them later for around $15-$20. Same thing with Barry Sanders, Emmitt Smith, Vince Carter Jason Williams, etc.
  • The big difference is knowing that a wax case of '85 Topps should get you about 4+ McGwire rookies whereas a case of just about any '03-04 Basketball product may get you 0 Anthony's. Too much of a gamble for my blood and I live in Vegas, the capital of gambling. image
