Strange 1939 Jefferson Pics posted, Finally, Thanks

I am lost on this one... I got it in change today, Saw it immediately and even the cashier asked for it back. Nah, I'll keep it......anyway if i can get the pics to load, Hopefully one of you will be able to tell me what's wrong here. Besides the copper appearance. On the reverse when i looked for a mintmark, I thot it was a Philly, after i scanned it at 600 dpi. in the bottom of the memorial below where the mintmark should be is a backward S. I didn't think there was a 1939-S? Not to mention it has Monticello struck above into the monument as well.

On the Obverse, When i clicked to emboss it looks like the head of a Buffalo in front of Jefferson's mouth? Not sure about this one. Any Idea's?

  • The Red Book lists the 1939-S Jeff mintage at 6,630,000. Those with the reverse of 1938 comprise about half those. I'd sure like to see the pictures!

Just a guess. This has the look of a coin that was dug up.
These were .750 copper and .250 nickel.
Maybe something in the soil took away part of the nickel on the surface of the coin.
Can't really see what you are seeing on the reverse of the coin.
A cleaning on the obverse might explain it's look.

Like I said, just a guess.
    A neat old coin.image
