10 Best Individual Coins not Listed in the Book?

Here's an interesting tangent to another thread: how about the 10 greatest individual coins not listed in the 100 Greatest US Coins book? I have one I can nominate to get the list started - the MS65 1873-CC Seated Dollar. Not listed in the book, yet the combination of rarity and condition make it an all time classic. Any others like this?

There are no moderns included in the original list. It would be confusing to put them anywhere but last.

Certainly the PMM leads the list of the most important moderns. image

Ask a serious question... get a bunch of jokers. image

Seriously - what coins of stature are there that were not listed in the book? I named one and for the life of me can't really think of any others - except perhaps the Eliasberg 1889-CC Morgan.

    Any [real] thoughts?

Bruce - You must be bored again !!! The book is the 100 most famous coins.....not individual coins.....otherwise

1963 Proof 70 deep cameo lincoln cent
    1944 d ms 68 red Lincoln
1960 D Jefferson nickel ms 64 full steps
    etc.etc.

There are quite a few moderns that should be on the list but they don't attract the attention
and the dollars that the older coins do. Many of these should be in the top 100 not relegated
    to runner-up status.

I Disagree a little bit. The state quarter " mules " attract a lot of attention, and are very rare !!
Also ike dollars struck on wrong planchets !!

It's hardly surprising that none are included but there are quite a few that are just as interesting
and rare. The '64 clad quarter or the '65 silvers are interesting, if not well known. There are the
'74 aluminum and steel cents, '75 No-S dimes, and a few others which come to mind. They don't
have the prices that the older coins do and to a large degree this is natural. But it's interesting that
    they are simply ignored.

If memory serves the latest coin listed is the '33 $20, which is one year before what many consider
the modern era. There are the '43 coppers which could have made the list. These are quite well known
even among the general public, and the Denver is still unique. Yet no mention.

gem ms 1875-s twenty center BUT fully struck with the $ double punched mintmark where the serifs on both ends of the s mintmark make it look like a dollar sign, and the coresponding die crack 3pm to 9 pm thruogh the outer letters and on the obverse the bar of the seven punched into the dentils just below the 7 in the date a really cool rare coin with many internesting facets about it and an underappreciated variety in the twenty centers

a gem proof deep/ultra cameo 1871 three cent nick the worst grainy damaged flans produced that year for the proofs and to get a coin of this date with mirrorgem ms s let alone cameo and even deep/ultra cameo is a minor miracle

gem ms 1878-cc quarter with the cancelled die raised line across miss liberty a magic cc mintmarked coin and struck with a cancelled die to boot maybe 15% of the 78-cc where struck with this cancelled die and since they have found many cc dies that where cancelled recently in an old pit at the carson city mint and also therre is a giveaway of a silver bar struck with a cancelled cc die given away as a door prise here you have a classic seated coin from the wild west of the 1870's and with the fantastic cc mintmark and also struck from a cancelled obverse die and officially released into circulation the ultimate cool and available to many for incl;usion in their type sets! and to find a gem and also monsdter toned to boot for me is within this 10 best individual coins

  • Michael, you made me think:

The 1859 Double Headed, (Double Obverse) IHC. Unique, and extremely unlikely to happen in the FIRST place, but it did. I guess a lot of our picks are errors, but that one is a biggie. Rick snow's book has good write-up about it.

Did the 1955 DDO cent make that top 100 coin book?

The 1964 Kennedy Half should have also made the list. It was a international coins for many years. Still admired by many.
