<< <i>Hey Global grader, get your greasy thumb off that Ruth card! >>
it was probably a reprint....
I finally called and was told that the cello pack was in Mark Murphy's house when it burnt down !!
I kept emailing them asking about restitution, never getting a reply. Well, about 6 months later I get my cello back. They graded the fire damaged cello with a grade of 1 !!!! I still have the graded cello (who would buy it ?) . I had to laugh, what else could I do ?
Which website is worse ? GAI's or Topps' ? They've both been "under construction" for years....
They call me "Pack the Ripper"

That is the saddest story that I have ever heard. Unfortunately, it is but one of the many stories about how GAI mishandles the cards of its customers. Every company make mistakes but the manner in which GAI treats its customers is unacceptable. If the owners of GAI want to know why the vast majoirty of sportscards collectors do not use their service, they have to look no further than crap like this.
Holy Smokes Batman!

Have you got a scan of the smokin' 75 pack? That is incredible! Are you serious? That borders on moronic!
No wait - that IS moronic!!!!
If you have the time, please scan the pack and post it....that just may be the scan of the year!

This is the only problem I ever had sending stuff to GAI, but I would have preferred that it happened to one of my other cellos, not this one. Its slightly charred or mildewed on the front and was a little water logged when I got it back.
I am a novice when it comes to scanning and posting pics in this forum. I hope I did this right, if not, someone please forward some instructions.
They call me "Pack the Ripper"
That's pretty damn funny but sucks for you.
I wonder why they had to send it to Mark Murphy in the
first place......maybe a second opinion as he was the one
that showed them how to spot resealed unopened material.
email me the scan from your file and I will post it for you.

They treat their customers terrible
(and in my case, potential customers)
<< <i>email me the scan from your file and I will post it for you. >>
Here ya go - dt scanned it large which will expand the screen but you can definitely see what he got back!

What did they say to you? Did they say anything?

I know mark Murphy graded unopened paks for GAI, but shouldn't that have been done "at the office" and not his home?
I guess I can believe that they sent it back to you....I'm sure that cello wasn't covered by his insurance policy, unless he had a clause for work-related materials being damaged....but that's highly unlikely.
Well, I guess if you have a burned cello pak, you know it will at least grade a 1.5!
Dal
Did the flames in anyway hurt the Brett card in the cello?
From the scan Stone posted, it looks like there's ash stain/residue on
the cello wrapping. Unless I'm missing something like the cello wrap
has melted on the Brett card. The Brett looks pretty good in general. Has better
centering than most samples I've seen. Why not break it out and submit
that alone if you can salvage it? The pack looks better than the 1.5 given IMO,
but I guess a "fire" qualifier will knock it down 5 or 6 grades.
I had a very frustrating situation
when I "tried" to deal with GAI.
Dispite REPEATED phone conversations and emails
with both Danny Fisher And Mike Baker, I was
repeatedly lied to time after time after time...
about several different things - they had an "excuse"
for everything except for how bad their excuses were!!!
The only thing they mangaed to do correctly,
the first time they tried was to CHARGE MY Credit Card!
Now, bear in mind that all I was trying to do was
get a "gai membership" so that I could try them out
based on the reccomendation of a major GAI dealer!
(who also placed emails and calls for me on this
REDICULOUS 5 Month debacle!)
In the end, I was "Offered" or "Promised" nearly everything
but had nothing delivered on (and what few things I did get
were wrong and very very late... )
Baker offered a refund in late august, that finally recived
in the form of a check, in December after I DEMANDED it be sent
and even got in a battle with the CFO, Howard Kent!
NEEDLESS TO SAY, I feel the EXACT same way many others do!
and I never even Sent them a single card - and will never do it!
(I have even stopped buying them for crossover to PSA
out of sheer principle!)
Good luck getting anything that even resembles service
out of these schmucks. You will have to work at it!!

They screw up, lose something, delay for months
and IF you complain, they say it was unavoidable
(usually blamed on their holders... seriously)
and then throw "free grades" at you...
Then, mark my words... it will happen again....
on those free grades! and again on your next order...
and the next
and the next
etc....
Stick with PSA.
GAI will continue to Screw you
like they have so many others (besides envoy I guess) that
have TRIED to use them (including myself...
So if no one else is slabbing packs and/or boxes,
then I will just leave mine Unslabbed and continue
to send my cards to PSA... rather than waste my time
and my money trying to get GAI to do something,
fight with them, argue with them, fight some more,
get nothing but excuses, and free grade slips so
that I can start that fun process all over again..... No thanks.

I thought at first this was just going to be a b.s. story/joke.
lol...

That's disappointing. I have not submitted to GAI...was considering a few wax packs. They have been grading a lot of stuff...has people who have submitted a large amount of cards have this problem?
A lot of dealers are selling the stuff...I wonder if that means they are more "dealer friendly" rather than neutral...that too would be disappointing. Mike Baker seemed like a really nice guy when I met years ago when he worked for PSA.
Why did it take so long just to give a membership? That makes little sense. Do they require membership to submit cards? Just curious.
Sorry to hear you had that much problem - how much was the membership?
Oh, and Hi!

Well, they first "lost my online application"
(yeah right) which I found out about when I called in
checking on it (but somehow they had my name
and credit card info! hmmm?). So they did another
order for it, and charged my card, then nothing came.
I called back weeks later and they said they were
waiting to see what to send me, because they
had "changed the package" and it was now $20 more
(originally $79, now $99) and included totally different
"extras" sent with the free gradings.
I was ticked that again I had to call to find out
where my stuff was. I was assured that I woud get
the items and was charged the additional $20 and
then nothing. I then called and was told something
like they forgot to send it or they lost it or what ever
and then it STILL did not come, so I called to cancel
and Baker started calling offering me a "lifetime membership"
and other Free stuff...
it was very sad.
I politely declined his offer and explained that I could not
trust them to have my cards if they could not even
get my membership package sent out.
(sounds like I was smart in retrospect!)
and then spent weeks trying to get the refund he promised.
It was a freakin' nightmare!!
<< <i>It was a freakin' nightmare!! >>
BKAH
No....that was a terrible inconvenience....a freakin' nightmare is when your mother-in-law and her "wonderful" passive aggressive sister come to visit for the weekend and find San Antonio weather so great that they stay for a month!!!!!

There are a few things I would like to add. First of all, my intention was not to turn this thread into a GAI bashing thread. I had a GAI story that I thought would interest people and apparently it did.
I must say that since they cooked this cello, I have continued to use GAI and have not had any other problems - in fact, I enjoy thier service and feel they have graded my packs very well. Allot of people have jumped into this thread stating that they dislike GAI, but most of them have not explained why. I feel people should explain thier reason for thier displeasure or keep to themselves.
Now to answer a few questions that were posed in some previous posts.
The cello was sent to Mark Murphy's house because when GAI first started grading packs, they gave you the option of sending your stuff to two locations - Mark's house on the east coast or to thier office in California.
I live on the East coast, so I sent the cello to Mark. Who knew his house would burn down...
Someone also mentioned that I should crack out the Brett rookie and have it graded. I don't think it would grade well since I believe that the cards were also water damaged. The card is probably stuck to the one below it.
I too was surprised when I got the cello back. When I emailed GAI about restitution, I figured they would give me some free grading due to the loss of the cello - I never expected to get the cello back graded.
Although I have a bunch of PSA graded stuff, I have never submitted to them. I live 10 minutes from SGC and usually just drop off and pick up my cards at thier grading center. I save a ton on shipping. I recently joined the PSA collectors club and will be sending in my free grading sheet soon. To get a good feel for PSA, I plan to send them some old and some new stuff from baseball and football. I am waiting for a Roethlisberger Black Refractor card to come in the mail and then I will send the order in.

<< <i>my intention was not to turn this thread into a GAI bashing thread... but most of them have not explained why. I feel people should explain thier reason for thier displeasure or keep to themselves. >>
there have been many many threads
were everyone Did explain in detail
(as I did here). Over the pas couple of years
GAI has done NOTHING to change this
public perception, and EVERYTHING to
keep it going, by screwing up over and over.
<< <i>I too was surprised when I got the cello back. When I emailed GAI about restitution, I figured they would give me some free grading due to the loss of the cello - I never expected to get the cello back graded. >>
The people at GAI are likely not
financially sufficient to cover all the items
that were destroyed in the fire
and had to do what they thought would
cover their own Ass!
YOU SHOULD GET YOU MONEY OUT OF THAT
RATHER THAN THAT DESTROYED PIECE OF GARBAGE!
<< <i> too was surprised when I got the cello back. When I emailed GAI about restitution, I figured they would give me some free grading due to the loss of the cello - I never expected to get the cello back graded. >>

I'm not sure I understand...did they give you some money for the damaged pack? Or was the graded pack all you got? That would be really bad!
<< <i>YOU SHOULD GET YOU MONEY OUT OF THAT

BKAH
I agree...that was pretty tacky to send back a damaged pack by the own hands...even tho it was an accidental fire...I can't believe they did that....
Then again, I would like the last month of my life back also!
