  • Unfortunately, any coins being sold from China are generally looked at with suspicion and assumed to be counterfeits until proven otherwise these days. It's unfortunate that even genuine items get little serious attention.

  • Suspicion I wouldn't know, but there seems to be a tiny hole/dig on the reverse, a little higher than the centre. As if someone used a compass! image

Is it a legitimate sea-salvaged coin? Possibly. In the scans, the obverse color looks somehow off. Maybe it's real, and maybe it isn't. There's no way I can tell from the scans, and possibly not even if I had it in hand. Sorry to not be of help.

  • I'll have a look in the Danish catalog to compare the dies. At first glance the coin would seem to be real but I would be very sceptic. This is a very scarce coin and it was not struck for trade with China. It may of course have found its way there in other ways. Do you have the exact weight of it?

    Welcome to the boards!

  • First of all I have to correct myself. I thought the coin was only struck for trade with India, in fact it was used all over south Asia and probably in China as well. Although the mintage was fairly large the coin is very scarce today.

Two dates exist: 1771, stuck in Copenhagen (Denmark) and 1777, struck in Kongsberg (Norway). The coins have the same design and as Norway was part of Denmark at the time they can both be considered Danish. The Krause catalog lists them under Greenland. This is absolute rubbish, they have nothing what so ever to do with Greenland image

There is a picture of the 1777 coin here: link Unfortunately I have not been able to find any info in English, but at least the picture is decent. I will try and get a scan from a Danish catalog for you as well.

The weight seems correct and the die appears to be similar to the coin that is pictured in the Danish catalog. I would still be careful about whether this coin is genuine, but who knows - it might just be. Is it from a wreck? Perhaps the wreck was a Danish ship?
