NBDowney goes 100% on 1956 Baseball Set

This guys an animal !!! Seems like only yesterday that he retired his monumental 1972 Topps Baseball Set that was amongst one of the truly great set registry groups "The Fab Five"of sets.
In short order, seems like about a year, Neil has disbanded his beloved 72's to dig deeper into the vintage world. His choice?, 1956 Topps Baseball. Quite remarkable really that he stands 100% complete and on the "Front Page!" in 20th place on the 56' Baseball registry. The set itself is very collectible because of the bounty of material out there, but this does'nt minimize this effort. There are still plenty of tough cards and Neil's set has plenty of nice mid to high grade examples. Check out the scans. A 6.65 weighted GPA means there are a gob of really nice 7's in his set. Check out his Clemente. You might not see a better 7!
Focused, devoted to the hobby, and relentlessly frugal I am sure that there is more upgrading in Neil's future based on his expressed love for this project.
Congratulations my friend.
Your energy on this set, as you know, has become contagious and at some point maybe we can both reside on the "Front Page!". image
Next stop; 7.0!

  • nice job neil! it really only seems like yesterday that you started the project. what's next? i seem to remember you were doing 55 's as well.
  • Can I get in on some of this?

I just reached 100% a couple days ago. Granted it is only 12 cards, but they were difficult to find. It took about 2 years of constant searching/buying.

Great Job. I started on a 56 set and got about 20 percent through it and Quit. I did not have the patience or nuts to stick with something I started, yes I was ever tempted of other cards dangling in front of my eyes and broke under pressure. Congrats on sticking with something and finishing....a True collector.

  • Hi Guys, Thank you for your kind words. I think that it has taken me about 16 months to complete this set. It is true that if you just throw money at a set, it can be completed in a short time. However, many of you who know me also know that I don't do that. I believe that putting the set together on a tight budget is part of the fun of collecting. I paid under 74% of SMR for the entire set (which includes 200%-300% of SMR for some of the truly rare last cards). The set as it stands now has 58 PSA 6s, 281 PSA 7s and 3 PSA 8s. In the past I have collected some other sets that I have completed and then shortly after sold to pay for other projects. This time it is different. I really love this set. It is currently at a GPA (6.65 weighted GPA - 6.84 real GPA) that I would have only dreamed of getting it to when I started this set. My hopes are to take a run at a GPA of 7.0 someday. Perhaps to collectors with deep pockets, this is no great feat. But for me and all of the other "common" collectors, it is a task worth going after. I will also be trying to add to my 1953 Topps set which I have had on the shelf for a while. The 1953 Topps set is an equally beautiful set in my opinion. Both sets will be slow going due to a shortage of funds but it's always been "brick by brick" for me anyway. I may never complete either in the grade that I ultimately want but it's great fun trying. Special thanks goes out to Ray Boehm for his support and friendship. Also thanks to "The 53 Kid" for getting me started and hooked on my dream set of the future (1953 Topps). Good luck with all of your dream sets and have a happy holidays. Neil

remember...its not about the grade so much as the card.....make sure your 7 is better then the 6 you replace it with....

    loth
  • Great going Neil....patience has its rewards. I know I could have helped you finish sooner, but unfortunately sold a hundred or so commons to Memory Lane at Ft. Washington show (in order to upgrade to 8's) just before you started.

    GL with upgrade process.
