Question For Jefferson (Or Anyone Who Knows) Experts Re: Color

Re: the Appalachian Hoard nicks, those were only War nicks, right? Were some of them bright yellow? I saw a 1943 War nick that was bright, BRIGHT, yellow on the obverse and reverse and did not know what to think of it. Grade may have been MS65 or so. Cost was $7.00.

As a side note, I also saw a 1950-D in UNC with beautiful multiple pastel colors on the reverse. Thought about buying it, but did not.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks, Richard.

  • The Applachian hoard was mostly war nickels. They are known for their bright pastel colors. A solid, bright yellow coin would not seem like the others I've seen. Mine has yellow so a picture is in order, see below image I understand there were other coins in addition to the war nickels, but the silver Jeffs were the majority of that hoard.

I believe all were War nickels. Rampage, the color you described, although attractive, does not qualify as being from this hoard.
One easy 'tell' is to look at the font on the NGC insert. As these were mostly graded in August of the year they were "discovered" (there lies the drama!) and NGC used a specific font during this time only, it's easy to have the Applachian hoard confirmed.

I've owned seven at one point (none now image ) and like the Salt Lake City Peacock Hoard, these coins are shroud in a conspiracy of controversy and intrigue.

    Edited to add the image

  • Richard --

Did the 50-D have colors like this one?

If so, you should have bought it. I've seen/have a couple of nickels with similar toning and all are NT and quite pretty.

As for the AH -- IMHO -- if you want nicely toned NT Jeffersons -- pass on these coins. If you want a bit of "intrigue, drama, and controversy" as Braddick puts it -- you can find them in specific NGC slabs and most have unbelievable color.

  • Braddick - I was told there were a few Morgans as well as war nickels. These never reached the market as far as I know.

I only remember war nickels. The AH did have a yellow nickel, I remember seeing it. It was lemon yellow obverse, with an orange speckle around the periphery. Unfortunately, don't remember the reverse, and don't remember the date either. I think Paragon owned when I saw it.
Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.

Yes, the lemon yellow is what this coin had with little orange speckles.
