ICCS versus PCGS

I have crossed coins from PCGS to ICCS before, but never from ICCS to PCGS. I am about to cross some coins to PCGS and am trying to decide whether to cut off the ICCS certificate side of the flip (i.e. send them in "raw") or to just send them in the complete ICCS holder and ask that PCGS send the ICCS certificate back with the coin. Any thoughts???

  • I have sent about ten ICCS coins to PCGS for crossover, and they were all in their holders. Each one crossed and improved , all were returned with the ICCS certs.

  • I've only crossed from ICCS to NGC, and removed the coin from the ICCS holder, NGC grades were 1 to 2 points higher...

If you are going to cross some of your wonderful Large Cents, be aware that the 'Red' designation is not the same for ICCS and PCGS, or NGC for that matter. ICCS will give the 'Red' to a coin that is only 90% red, the US TPGs have to have the coin be 99% red. At least that is my experience.

That said, ICCS and PCGS don't grade the same. ICCS uses the technical grade where as PCGS is into market grading where eye appeal is considered. If you are doing a true cross over with a minimum grade specified, then keep them in the ICCS flips.

  • It's a crap shoot either way.
  • IMO, ICCS is more conservative than PCGS when comes to Canadian coin grading. I'm thinking to do the same thing too, and I would probably get the coin out of the flip before submitting it. Cause I think it should give the coin a better chance of upgrade by not giving the grader a first impression of a conservative grade. But also, you are taking a risk that the coin can be down graded.

  • Depends on the particular coin and series....ICCS is tougher on copper cents, PCGS is tougher on King George dollars....and ICCS will never cross-over (same or higher grade) a coin in another holder, they will kill you on the grade. I speak from experience, not hearsay and rumours.

Are you saying that ICCS has acquired its' conservative reputation by looking at the grades of others, then grading the same coins a little lower?

I've seen an ICCS upgrade on a PCGS
