SOLD: $425 (Reserve met)
Bidding is now live on these boards--PM or email your bids in whole dollar amounts, with a minimum $5 increase.
Here is how bidding works--it is like eBay. You send me a bid. The "Current Bid" is brought to the lowest increment that beats the last bidder, or, if your bid doesn't beat the highest bid, the "Current Bid" will be raised for the high bidder. Here are some examples:
-The "Current Bid" is $425, and that person's max is $425. You bid $500. The "Current Bid" becomes $430, but someone will have to bid $505 to take the lead
-The "Current Bid" is $425, but the bidder's max is $500. You will need to bid at least $505 to take the lead.
-The set will be sold at the "Current Bid"
You will be notified if you are outbid. Basically, bid the max you will pay for the set, and the highest bidder will win. The only difference from eBay is that I may extend the auction if additional bids come in. If there is a tie, the first bidder wins.
Bidding will not end before Wednesday, 11/17 at 10:00PM Eastern, but may be extended if there is strong activity near the scheduled close.

I think it might be hard to part with this set, but I'm ready to pass it along to a new owner. The set is housed in a Mehrig album that ends in 1961 (must be no newer than 1964 as in the catalog of other series, it lists Franklins as current). All of the coins have toned, some lightly, some heavily, some monstrously. All coins are uncirculated, and are typical coins of the era in terms of strike--all are uncirculated. The album itself is intact, but not in the greatest shape. I would recommend moving the coins to a new album to stop any additional toning, as well.
The pictures do not show the lustre, as I wanted to show the color instead. I have shown the album to many people who have seen the images--everyone's reaction has been the coins look better than the photos. I do believe two of the war nickels are not original to the album, the 1942-P (which is lightly toning), and the 1943-P.
Edited to add: The set contains 64 coins with no duplicates. The dates are from 1938-1961 with all mint marks (there is no 1961-D, as the album ends at 1961. There are a few undated holes, however).
The entire album can be viewed here.
Here's my favorite from the album:
The cover, first page, and last page (middle page not photo'd)
Here is how I am planning on selling the album. Firstly, I would like to see the album stay together as an original set, so I reserve the right to deny someone's right to bid if I believe the album will simply be broken up and sold. That said, I will begin by taking bids via Private Message or email until Friday evening, 11/12. On Friday night, I will make public on this message board the high bid, and allow competitive bidding until Wednesday 11/17 at 10pm eastern. If bidding continues near the end of the auction, I reserve the right to extend its length.
Shipping will be based on the final value of the album (Registered only if it sells above $500). I will accept checks and money orders for this album.
I have a reserve set at a bit above what I paid for the album. If the reserve is met/beaten, the album will be sold.
Thanks for looking and participating. I'll be glad to answer any questions you may have.
Thanks,
Jeremy

<< <i>what's your reserve? >>
An amount I thought of earlier that I find a fair price for me to be willing to part with the set that I promise will not be changed based on bidding activity (ie, I won't secretly raise it).
I sold them to Jeremy a little over a year ago. I bought them out of a very fresh deal in Monterey CA. The coins walked in, my dealer friend paid for them, I paid a bit more than he did and they walked out with me.
Allthough there are really no gems the set is very unique and pleasing and was put together over quite a bit of time, forgotten about and originally toned. To me it is a working man's set of coins with great eye appeal representative of the care taken to put them together.
What makes it even better is that the key date...39-D is one of the best coins technically in the bunch...the 54-S, one of my favorites as well...so typifies the strike for the date and has the best toning in the bunch.
I think the coins are worth more than the current reserve...and no, Jeremy didnt put me up to it.
John
