I think the ancient coinage quality control was quite lax compared to today's standards. Although I have never seen any ancient with something other than horrible strike centering and oval, broadstruck type appearance. Compare that to all the strange mint errors we find today.

You can find some nice brockages on ancient coins.

  • Here is a Byzantine Gold coin where the die maker screwed up the lettering under the cross, it should say CONOB but the worker engraved the C and N backwards. This piece was struck at the Carthage mint and is less then 1/2 inch in diameter but weighs just over 4.5 grams.

It's not an ancient, but I've got a 1672 threepence (G. Britain) that's double struck... a very neat little piece boasting tons of history.

  • Lots of mint errors in ancients - some minor, some major. Coins from a mint like Rome would be less likely to have significant errors as the best die cutters and best coiners worked there. Coins made at provincial mints would be more likely to have errors

  • I've got a small bronze that is double struck with about a 120 degree rotation between strikings.
