Pulled this raw 86 out of hiding and forgot how clean she was. Any opinions on grade?

Looks like it has a good shot at MS66.
  • Neat doubled die - depending on the luster and how the chatter on the face looks - Im in the MS66/65 range
  • The eagles breast feathers are weak and some light marring on the cheek but I'd say it's an MS63.
  • 65

    nice coin!
  • MS66.................I would imagine that the Eagles Breast feathers look flat due to the scan.....that's what happens with most of my scans???? Very few marks on that coin............very choice indeed.

    I would vote a solid ms64. I like the doubled 1 and 8.

It seems that there is just enough light scuff marks on the profile to keep it from a 65. Still a nice example.
  • I think MS-66 may be a bit optimistic. I think it will go MS-65.
  • Typical late strike reverse on the 1886. Choice Uncirculated MS63 is my guess. Check the reverse on that coin. I'd be willing to bet it has a nice clash. image

Also, Nice doubled '18' on the date. My VAM book is at the office and I don't have a resource now to correctly VAM it.

Depending on how strong luster and strike are, and how visible the light chatter marks are..... I would guess a 64.....

Just to fill in some blanks. This coin has not seen the light of day in over 25 years. It was purchased back in the late 60's when I was about 10 years old from money saved from going to the store for my Mom (may she RIP). I had scribbled on a piece of paper, gem unc 65 $21.75. Now mind you, things were different back in the late 60's.... doing chores around the house got you a nickel or maybe a dime if you were really good, not like the 5 bucks my daughters nail me for today for doing nothing, so that was HUGE money for me back then. I got to know the owner of the shop and he would point me in the right direction. He tried to persuade me to buy 1 nice piece instead of the 20 holed Indians I really wanted to buy. Back then uncirculated coins were sold as either BU-60 , CH BU-63 or GemBU-65, nothing else... those were the ONLY unc. grades. So this piece could go anywhere from 64-66 in my mind. I see a nice 65 shot at 66 on a good day. Don't know the VAM # by the way.

    MS 65 at least. It's a beauty.
    Great story BTW.

65 seems right on this one. And it's a neat variety.
