Hi all,

First off, please excuse my darkside ignorance. Someone posted a sweet looking Gothic Crown over on the light side and it has peaked my curiosity! Could you please tell me what a "gothic" coin is? I've seen both Gothic crowns and florins and don't know the difference lol. Are there other Gothic coins? What country are they from? What years? What composition? aaarrrgggg sooooo many questions..... I eagerly await my darkside lesson

Coins from Great Britain. The 'Gothic' is the type of portrait of Queen Victoria. Crowns are larger than the Florins and much more expensive.

They were minted from 1847 to 1887. Many more Florins were minted than crowns.

I thought 'Gothic' referred to the script style in the legends?

Try NEN. They usually have nice images of pre 20th C. Brit coins.

As Josh said, Gothic is the script style used on the coins. Gothics in high grade command a temendous premium, be they crowns (1847, 1853) or florins (1851-1887). They are thought by many to be among the most stunning coins ever minted. The best gothic florin portrait is the first one, 1851-1869. Many of the coins of those dates have a superb prooflike finish, even though they were intended for circulation.
