Does anyone collect Spanish 100 Pesetas from the 60's?

I guess there's a string of these from 1966 through 1970 - The coin strikes me as interesting and I wouldn't mind having a complete set of these - anyone collect them? Know anything about them?

  • I've got all but the '69 of the '66-'70 series. The '69 has curved and straight 9 varieties and only had a total mintage of 1 million. Krause notes that it is not uncommon to have the date in the star altered to pass for the scarce 1969. They feature Francisco Franco and all contain .4887 of an ounce of silver. I've got an extra '66 on my List.

  • Brad - thanks - my preference on these would be original UNC coins like the one above - which happens to also be a 66/66. Let me know if you run into any other ones! Thanks!

I've liked these for a long time. They actually got a lot of circulation for
a brief period which is unusual for most silver coins in the modern era.
The scarce dates are pretty difficult to locate but I wouldn't be surprised
if they're more available in Spain.

These coins can still be found for close to melt value in XF and AU and
even uncs are often very reasonably priced. In light of the fact that the
Spanish government melted most of these back in the early '80's, they
are extremely underappreciated and undervalued. One of the better
dates was probably as widely melted as the most common issue.
